Overpopulation is the world's most serious environmental problem.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Some people believe that the most urgent environment-related issue around the world nowadays is
overpopulation. In my opinion, I completely agree with this statement and think that it has many
negative impacts on the environment.

Body 1. First reason: overpopulation leads to the depletion of resources in the surrounding areas.

Firstly, overpopulation can lead to the depletion of environmental resources in the surrounding areas
where people live. In other words, demands for natural resources has, in the past, been correlated with
the growth of the population. In some situations, as the population grew too large, these limited
resources were excessively harvested to the point of emptying. For example, around the world, multiple
reports constantly raised the alarm about the low number of marine animals due to the overfishing to
meet the demand of a growing population. This is why overpopulation is a serious environmental issue
that can exhaust the precious natural resources.

Body 2. Overpopulation results in more pollution of the air, water, and the ground.

Secondly, overpopulation can lead to more pollution. As people improve their living standard and
achieve technical development, we also increase the amount of waste being dumped into the air, the
water and the ground. In consequence, the polluted air fastens the rate of climate change, while the
polluted water and ground endangers the lives of both animals and plants. For instance, in order to
obtain the needed energy, the coal industry produces a large amount of greenhouse gas and releases it
into the atmosphere, ultimately damaging the ozone layer. Without its protection, UV light from the sun
can penetrate any living organisms and damage their DNA substantially. Thus, it is necessary to be aware
of the pollution issue in overpopulated areas.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that overpopulation is a serious environmental issue because it leads to
the depletion of nearby resources and serious pollution of the surrounding environment.
