The line chart illustrates the number of people who

participated in the Olympics from 1924 to 2012, whereas the

bar chart shows the number of men and women among those
participants.
Overall, there were more participants entering the Olympics
over the given period. In addition, there were always
significantly more men than women participating, however,
female athletes’ number almost caught up to males at the end
of the period.
Overall,
In the year 1924, there were about 3000 Olympics participants
in total. This figure experienced a steady increase to about
7000 people in 1984, and had a large surge to a high-point of
10,000 people in 2012. Generally, the number of participants
had approximately tripled in almost a century.
Regarding each gender individually, while there were 3,000
men performing at the Olympics in 1924, there were barely
any female participants. As the number of men gradually
increased to about 6,000 people in 2012, the figure of women
experienced a significant jump from 1984 to 2012 (from about
1,500 women to nearly 5,000 women). This jump also explains
the large surge observed in 1984-2012 period when looking at
the total number of participants.
