Taal was founded at Balangon, now a neighborhood of Lemery, Batangas, by Datu Balinsusa and Datu

Dumangsil from Borneo. Taal included Lemery during the time. The town's name, "Taal," which means "pure or
unadulterated" in Tagalog, is claimed to have derived from the term "taad," which refers to the upper section
of the sugarcane used in planting. A Spaniard who visited the area during the early days of the Spanish
administration is believed to have encountered a farmer who was cultivating sugarcane. The Spaniard inquired
of the farmer as to the name of the location. The farmer, thinking he was being asked what he was planting,
replied, "Taad," which the Spaniard repeated to recall, but because he didn't know how to pronounce the last
consonant "d," he pronounced it as "l," hence the name "Taal."
