Date: 20 May 2021

Bulletin Number: 1000059437-PIB Revision: 01
BOP (Blow Out Preventer)

Subject: Reversible BOP cavity interference

Product Model: 18-5/10/15M NXT, Pipe Rams and Multirams

Effectivity: All Ram Blocks identified in Tables 1 and 2

Affected Assemblies: All Ram Assemblies identified in Tables 1 and 2

Objective
To notify customers of a possible component interference issue if the affected rams are operated within a
reversible BOP cavity that has been configured in the standard orientation as shown in Figure 1. The
potential for component interference does not exist in any other BOP cavity configurations.

Issue
The affected rams listed in Tables 1 and 2 have the potential to contact the top corners of the reversible
BOP cavity and cause gouging to occur when the rams are functioned. Figure 2 and Figure 3 illustrate
where component damage could occur. Figure 4 and Figure 5 show actual component damage.

Solution
Only ram blocks with chamfered top corners are susceptible to the potential interference issue described
above. Ram blocks with a large radius on the top corners are not susceptible to this issue. Affected ram
blocks should be visually inspected to identify which style top corners they have. See Figure 6 and Figure 7
for the two types of chamfers that are problematic. See Figure 8 for the large radius that is acceptable.

Figure 8: Ram Block with Large Radius (Common for Multirams)

The immediate solution is to only use ram blocks with a large radius as shown in Figure 8 for standard
operation within a reversible BOP cavity. In order to use chamfered ram blocks in the standard
orientation of a reversible BOP cavity see ordering and contact information. Ram block modification may
be required.
