Document Development Exposition: Instructions and Usability Test Script

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning

I knew I had to focus on a skill that I am proficient in, so I chose an activity that I do every day. The
most challenging thing about planning my instructions was deciding the best skill to put into words. I
decided to go to the beginner level of all skills in the activity which is a drop spin.

First Draft (for peer editing)

For the first draft, it was challenging to put an action into words. I had to mimic the movements as I
typed each step out and read it off to a friend for them to mimic. It was also challenging to figure out
how to design an instructional writing to make it look basic, but also a fun look that goes with the
theme of the skill. I focused on one color all the way through to keep the document solid.

Second Draft (for your packet)

For the second draft, I focused on re-imagining my steps to create more concise statements that
would aid the reader. I also resized my images and shaped them all to the same rectangle shape. I
learned that readers like similar structure throughout, such as changing the sizing of my images.

Final Draft (for your portfolio)

There were very few edits that I needed to focus on for the final draft. I added an overview section
under the header, separated extra information into steps or into a “tips” section, and left-aligned all
my images. I learned that less is better in this sense as it keeps the instructions less cluttered and
easy to read and follow.
