STORY: Footnote to Youth by Jose Garcia Villa

1.) WHAT IS THE COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN IN THE STORY?

Amidst the discussion of Dodong and his father regarding him marrying his fiancée Teang,

Dodong’s evident adamancy persisted in his quick replies with resentment after each of his

father’s responses, he insisted that he is already an adult. Dodong was not able to discern

neither why his father questioned him about marrying at a young age nor his empathy and

skepticism regarding their union, he was not also able to read unto his father’s feedback of

intense and cruel silence and the strange helpless light in his father’s eyes.

2.) EXPLAIN THE CAUSE OF COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN THAT TRANSPIRED IN THE STORY.

Dodong’s father did to not clarify Dodong why he spoke to him in such a tone of voice,

what his silence is all about, and his visibly disturbed gazed of pity for him. As a result, Dodong

felt embarrassed and miserable during his paternity for squandering his youth.

3.) WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE GIVEN TO PREVENT THE COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN?

The seventeen-year-old Dodong was your typical teenager with a moody demeanor and

reckless choices, and his father should have noticed that. He could have been more patient in

clearly explaining to his son why he shouldn’t get married at such a young age, and Dodong,

on the other hand, should listen to his father in order for good communication to occur.
