One of the reasons why our lives have been simpler while living in the world is because of science and
technology. It benefits us in a variety of ways. It provides us with knowledge and information that allows
us to learn and discover new things. Indeed, the core of how science and technology contribute to
society is the discovery of new knowledge and then the use of that knowledge to improve human well-
being and alleviate societal problems. However, the idea that science is inherently dangerous is deeply
embedded in our culture. We should also be aware that science and technology are not synonymous.
Rather than technology, trustworthy logical information is unappreciated and has no moral or ethical
value. Scientists are not responsible for the inventive applications of research; the very nature of science
is that it is impossible to predict what will be discovered or how these revelations will be implemented.
Furthermore, the article claims that, while science is a wonderful benefit to us, there is always a
negative aspect to it that makes us wonder, is science still right? Is science truly beneficial to the world
or this just makes us harm?

Experience:

After reading the article, I'm beginning to have doubts about science. It begins to bewilder and perplex
me. Although science aids us in our daily lives, it also has a negative side in that it manipulates how we
live. In eugenics, for example, picking the finest attributes, selecting DNA, and implanting it into a new
life form are advocated. Cloning, for instance, is a procedure that scientists utilize to create perfect
genetic duplicates of living beings. Our science, as well as its dark side, will develop sooner or later as a
result of technological breakthroughs, and if this occurs, it may begin to harm living beings in the world,
particularly if the experiment fails, but who is to blame? Who has power over these things: science and
technology or us?

Reflection:

Our society is profoundly rooted in the belief that scientific knowledge is hazardous. The snake
addressed the Tree of Knowledge as the 'Mother of Science' in Milton's Paradise Lost, and Adam and Eve
were prohibited to eat from it. Genetic engineering and the alleged ethical concerns it poses; the
influence of science in weakening our spiritual values, despite the fact that some scientists are religious
themselves. Science is the most trustworthy, rational, quantitative, testable, and elegant approach of
comprehending the world. Science is at the core of our civilization, practically the dominant way of
thought in our day. However, science is a distant and frequently challenging concept for many people.
Part of the difficulty is that practically all scientific explanations contradict common sense and our
natural assumptions, because the universe isn't created on that foundation. The mixing of science and
technology is a significant concern. The gap between science and technology, between knowledge and
understanding on the one hand, and the application of that knowledge to make something or use it in a
practical way on the other, is crucial. Science generates theories about how the world works, whereas
technology generates useable items.

Application:
Subsequent to perusing and comprehend the article, this gives me an idea that as a piece of the
developing society, we can't deny the way that science and technology added to us, a great deal. What's
more, without a doubt later on, our science and technology will in any case have this developments and
innovations because of the impending revelations. That being said, and presently, and I figure we can't
separate this in our daily routines since this makes us experience simpler. Nonetheless, we should feel
that everything has negative sides in the circumstances that it can't control any longer. Having the
obligation and information for it will be a major assistance with the goal for us to live well and keep
away from these happenings. Furthermore, we ought to likewise know about the limits and viewpoints
that we are intersecting to.

The Medawar Lecture 1998 Is Science Dangerous?

Reflection Paper
(Antonio, Bullag, Hallera, Oracion)

Science has been around us ever since, it’s the core of our culture. It provides us
with reliable and logical explanations on how the world works. However, scientific
knowledge will always come to a point where it is out of bounds, where curiosity is on
the edge. Because of sensitive acts done by scientists in the past like the assumptions
that caused eugenics movements where people who suffered from hereditary
weaknesses are sterilized and selective immigration policy came to life, there’s a
distrust and anxiety that scientists focus only on their ambition to discover disregarding
their social responsibilities. Literature from different parts of the world portraying
scientists as soulless men that could produce disastrous results, media causing
misunderstanding, especially about genetics, and the fact that scientists can abuse their
roles as knowledge providers heighten the hostile responses from the society. On the
other perspective, religions and beliefs could also be the reasons why people oppose
the advances of science because it goes against the natural expectations. For instance,
bio-moralists are stuck in the idea that an embryo is already a human being,
disregarding the reason behind the creation and how it will be raised. This is why up
until now, abortion is debatable in many countries. Moral and ethical issues have been
there a long time ago, setting boundaries to everything, making all things natural, but
science wants to show more options, in which some of those are restricted to be done.
Science has the purpose of having the envision of the future, giving us ideas and
concepts on how to improve life, but what should we follow? Where should we put our
positions? Science or ethics? A long-time battle that will never settle.

As human beings with massive curiosity about everything, we always sought

answers to our questions. From smallest to biggest things, our questions seem to be
never-ending. Some of these are unanswerable which leads to seeking more knowledge
whether through pages of books or pages of the internet. Later we realized that the
answers that we’re looking for aren't supposed to be right, it’s supposed to be
understandable that provides both the pros and cons of the circumstances. This is
evident in how science gives exact reasons and solutions to what the world needs and
how religion and beliefs disapprove such acts. Like in the Philippines, the RH Bill which
is so big of an act for the problem of our country, overpopulation and poverty. Religion
denies this and we hear people around us talking about it with both negative and
positive feedback. Another example is the application of technology in science
discoveries which gives us a comfortable life. We’re lucky to be born in this generation
because we can no longer experience the struggles in the past, but of course there’s a
downside to this development such as the radiation, addiction, and etc. After reading
the article, fear of science somehow forms in me, it bewilders me. Given the extent of
the capabilities of science, especially in genetics, it can be used against us such as
manipulation. This is the dark side that can result in technological breakthroughs which
can harm the world, accidentally or not. Who is to blame? Who has power over these
things? Science, technology, or us?

Science does get the attention of the crowd, one step could change a lot of
people's perspectives and our society is profoundly rooted in the belief that scientific
knowledge is hazardous. However, science only provides interpretation and clarification
on how the whole universe works. It won't do any move unless it's gonna change the
game of the living. Every single step of science is being guided and supervised by the
professionals, governments, and us. Scientists don’t have the power to put science into
applications and that’s true in the building of atomic bombs. They are there to inform
the governments about the implications and danger that it would bring, but the decision
to build such a dangerous thing is in the governments’ hands. Despite the capabilities of
scientists mentioned above, their obligations to make people know about new
knowledge and give assessments to new science applications still have impacts on
society, they should take responsibility. This is why we agree on Joseph Rotblat’s
proposed Hippocratic oath for scientists initiated by the Pugwash Group in the USA.
Also, research has moral and ethical issues, especially when experiments involve
humans, animals, and food. As we all know, research can be done by everyone
nowadays. This is why we’re also responsible for the evolution of science. We believe
that the products of science are unpredictable when it comes to the development and
application. If we look at the bright side, science has made huge contributions to the
world, especially in the field of medicine. Genetics and molecular biology offer the
possibility of prenatal diagnosis, gene therapy to cure a genetic disease such as cystic
fibrosis, and stem cells to alleviate many medical problems from damaged hearts are
some of the examples.

As students, scholars of this country, our mission is to guide and inform those
people who aren't able to learn and achieve the education that we got. We all have
social obligations and it’s just right to let them know the truth behind what’s happening
like in the book "The Allegory of the Cave" made by Plato. We are the escaped
prisoners that are hungry for knowledge and we’re now walking our way outside the
cave. The obstacles are getting difficult, but our knowledge improves and we’re getting
more curious about the outside world. As we finally reach the outside of the cave, we’ll
encounter truths and going back inside despite the difficulties that we’ve been through
to educate others is a must thing to do, especially if we’re aiming to change the system.
Some will question the truth, blinded by their current beliefs and they might call us fake
or a puppet of science. It’s unavoidable, but we have to grow together with our
universe and learning about these will become our major assistance or direction to
know about the limits and viewpoints of what we’re intersecting to. We also must be
responsible for our actions as an individual whether you’re a professional or not, how
we produce and use the products of our own discoveries. Our intentions must be only
for building a better place for future generations. We always have to keep in mind that
everything that’s happening right now is because of the decisions that we made. But
how can we be so sure that professionals, especially scientists and the governments
have the same pure intentions like us? Knowledge is our main protection. This supports
the idea that public information about science is essential. The more encouraged and
urged people are to learn, the higher the resistance of us becoming tools of their
personal intentions. Professionals also need to learn from us, it’s a give and take
relationship. In conclusion, science and all other domains can be dangerous, in fact
they’re all naturally dangerous, but it’s us humans who put ourselves at risk.

Mr. Justin Ancheta,

I'd want to congratulate you for giving it your best and for the effort you put in during the
interview yesterday. I appreciate your enthusiasm for learning again and your commitment to do
so.

I LOVE YOU AND BEST OF LUCK!
