The Importance of Literature

1. What is literature, and why it is important?


 Literature is the total of preserved writings belonging to a given language of
people. Literature is the class or the total of writings, of a given country or
period, is which notable for literary form of expression, as distinguished on the
one hand from works merely of technical or erudite and, or the other from
journalistic or other ephemeral writings. And literature is important because
first and foremost, literature opens our eyes and makes us see more than just
what the front door shows. It helps us to expand our horizon and realize the
wide world outside. It builds our critical thinking skills, a leap into the past
how history and literature are entwined with each other.

2. What is the etymology of the word “literature”?


 Litteratura/literatura – “learning, a writing, grammar”
 Littera- meaning “letters” and referring to an acquaintance with the written
word.

3. What are the genres/types and sub-genre/sub-types of literature?


 Poetry, Prose, Drama, Fiction, Non-fiction, Short Story, Essay, Novel,
Personal Narrative, Folklore, History, Epic Tale, Biography, Mystery, Thriller,
Horror, Romance, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Legend and Myth.

4. What are the advantage of reading literary works?


 The advantages of reading literary works is that it encourages the development
of high-level thinking skills, it also gives us an appreciation for the importance
and beauty of literature. Reading literary works doesn’t just teach
communication skills, it also helps us to learn and appreciate about history,
including different cultures and societies.
