The Nutcracker is a bright and beautiful story that has been the highlight of the holiday
season for over 100 years. While this ballet has a history filled with love and cheer, we must
also acknowledge that it has a history of being disrespectful towards many cultures. At
Northern Plains Dance, we believe it is our duty as artists to both honor the traditional spirit
of The Nutcracker and adapt it to fit a more equitable world. Today, we are able to present
to you The Nutcracker as what it should be: a celebration not only of the holiday spirit, but
of our diverse cultures and customs and of the things that bring us together, like joy, hope,
and of course, dance.

synopsis
The curtain rises to reveal the annual Christmas Eve Party at the home of
Herr and Frau Stahlbaum. The magical and eccentric Herr Drosselmeyer
has planned a special surprise for his beloved niece, Clara. He presents her
with a wonderfully mysterious wooden Nutcracker.

Clara is immediately taken with the gift, but her brother, Fritz, is jealous and
steals the Nutcracker. In the chaos of his teasing, Fritz accidentally breaks
the Nutcracker. Herr Drosselmeyer comes to the rescue and assures Clara
all will be well.

The party ends and Clara, just before the stroke of midnight, returns to
the darkened living room to check on her Nutcracker. She is frightened by
large mice, but suddenly, Herr Drosselmeyer appears and the mice flee.
Much to Clara’s amazement, Herr Drosselmeyer commands the Christmas
tree to grow to such an enormous size that it pushes away the entire room.
Next, her Nutcracker springs to life. The Nutcracker introduces himself and
his soldiers to Clara.

The mice suddenly reappear, and a vicious battle ensues. The soldiers
seem to be winning, but the great Rat King appears and the tide turns.
The Nutcracker and the Rat King fight, and just as the Rat King is about to
overpower the Nutcracker, Clara distracts him, giving the Nutcracker the
chance to overcome the Rat King.

To Clara’s delight and surprise, the Nutcracker is transformed into a

handsome prince, who takes her on an enchanted journey to the Land
of the Snow, and then to the beautiful Kingdom of Sweets, where she is
entertained by dances from many lands.

The Sugar Plum Fairy and the Nutcracker Prince dance for Clara. The
Nutcracker Prince carries a sleeping Clara back to her home, where she
awakens, uncertain if her magical journey was a dream or reality.

educational Presentations
Northern Plains Dance is deeply committed to making dance accessible to all. A
key component of this mission is welcoming young audiences to the theater to
expose them to the wonder, excitement, and power of the art form. For students
at NPD’s Educational Presentations of The Nutcracker, their first impression of
the ballet will open them up to all that is possible. They will leave with visions
of themselves as dancers, historians, storytellers, or anything their imaginations
conjure.

Seeing the production is just the beginning for these young audiences. The
Educational Presentations are ripe with educational content, and students and
teachers are given tools to discuss the ballet, in which students learn about the
history of Tchaikovsky’s score, costuming, and dance terminology.

Educational Presentations are sponsored by Bismarck Public Schools. For more

information or to bring your school next year, contact us at
