Theme – what is the theme you are exploring for this unit?

For this unit, I am exploring the theme of Islamic art and how it is used to allow bold statements and
learn about the religion through different techniques of art. This theme overall has a very big part
within my lifestyle which allows me to be more intrigued in what I want to do within this. I really do
through this theme want to explore more into the communication aspect and how this can be
achieved through different means. The ways I would be able to show this is by experimenting more
in the art aspect of cyanotypes, marbling, screen printing and textiles.

Experiments – what are the four experiments you are going to be looking at for this unit
- Go into detail about each of the four experiments, what are you going to do, what are you
hoping to discover when doing each one, what techniques are you going to use and why

As said above the art-based experiments I want to achieve will be cyanotypes, marbling, more
development with screen printing and textiles and how I can incorporate each part to my theme and
how I want colour and text to be bold and relevant within my work.

Cyanotypes- what I want to do and achieve from this experiment is a way of showing how a limited
amount of colour then allows the viewer to focus on more of the text and what that then translates
to and has an overall effect to it. Through this I am hoping to discover how emotions can be felt
through an image with colour and one with limited colour like the cyanotype and what way this
would either increase the amount interest within the artwork or not. Also, if this would allow people
viewing to become curious about what the text is about through this. The techniques I will be using
to get through the cyanotype’s experimentation will be using the normal ink which would be used to
make an average cyanotype but try and experiment with different things for the ink and for this to
then make different colours as the background.

Marbling- what I want to do and achieve from this is ways of creating colourful backgrounds to then
go alongside the verses of the Qur’an. This way I can then see what would be more effective when
trying to show the verses. Through this I am hoping to discover how the emotions would then
change through the cyanotypes as there would be two colours which will show limitation on the
colours whereas marbling would be colourful. The techniques I will be using through this would be
to learn the basics of how to do marbling and what it requires to make and achieve overall. I would
need to do this because then I can be more prepared when coming towards having to do the
marbling.

Screen printing – what I want to do and achieve from this is ways of developing my skills and
allowing the right skills from the screen printing to come into play. Such as, further development of
the techniques I already know to make a successful art piece behind it. Through this I am hoping to
discover, ways to engage audiences but let voices be heard through the art of Islam and the different
variations of it. The techniques I am going to use will be a form of rediscovering the older techniques
which I had gone through previously but this time to allow the print to be printable to be able to
achieve the final outcome which is to allow the colours and the background to link. So this way it can
reflect how different colours can make people feel.

Textiles- what I want to do and want to achieve is one or two successful textiles pieces which then
the meaning of the Arabic text can be sewn into this. I am hoping to discover from this ways of
showing fabric being incorporated into the religion and how this can then be effective in the way
that it attracts people. The techniques I am going to use will be using basic sewing skills and
incorporating that into gathering the fabrics together to create the Arabic word/verse onto the
fabric.
Materials you will need for each experiment

For each of the modules of the projects, what will be needed will be listed below.
You will need:
Cyanotypes- acetate with design, cyanotype paper with the ink covered on them & water to help
develop the images after putting them in the machine which then covers the paper in UV light.
Marbling- inks, sticks to then bring them together as the marble.
Screen printing- acetate with the design, screen which needs to be exposed to UV light, inks to then
print onto & paper or a surface to print onto.
Textiles- different fabrics & sewing material

What are you hoping to learn overall from these experiments?

I am hoping to learn overall is how the art-based techniques would then be able to help “speak” out
loud and this can then allow this to help aid the final outcome and final major project through this
and show the different variety of ways that experimentation can take place.
