Page 33:
1- This passage is written with the first person singular “I hadn’t”, “I
went” …, so the author “Bill Bryson” is the main character of the
text. He went to Edinburgh “I went to Edinburgh” by train of
“Waverley station”, by a November dark night.
2- Bill Bryson discovered three monuments: “the castle and Bank of
Scotland”, “the Balmoral hotel” and the “Scott Memorial”.
Plus, he talked about two Scottish dishes “cooq-a-leekie soup” and
“haggis”.
And then he mentioned the “skirl”: the sound of a Scottish musical
instrument, and he described the buildings by an un-English
fashion because there were thin and tall and lit with golden
floodlight, and he talked about the bookshop windows which was
full with books who talked about Scotland or written by Scottish
authors.
3- The author was so happy and excited and fascinated by this city,
he used ameliorative adjectives as: “beautiful, beguiling, glorious,
happy, captivating, abustle”. In fact, his impression about the city
was totally joyful, full of life and sounds, and so animated because
he was passionate of this city. Plus, he used many time the
adjective “different”, which describe the peculiar and the specialty
of this city for the author.
