Focus Group Questions Answers

Bela: Do you think raising awareness of cyber bullying is important?

Speaker 1: yes, because it can lead to suicide, depression, and low self esteem

Speaker 3: even eating disorders

Speaker 4: it can lead to physical injuries

Speaker 6: “So, in terms of raising awareness, who is it important to raise awareness to, are we
raising awareness to victims of cyber bullying, to parents or other adults to tell them what to look
out for. Which group would you say is the most important?”

Speaker 1: “Victims and the ones that do it because, you tell the ones that do it the will deep the
situation even more.”

Speaker 6: “Will you be providing them information to find support? What will be important for the
victim?”

Speaker 1: “They should use quotes because its more uplifting than talks and website links especially
in this day and age.”

Bela: Ok so the next question is how do you think social media effects your mental health?

Speaker2: “You can see some stuff you shouldn’t be seeing by accident. And sometimes it can mess
you up.”

Speaker 6: “So you think social media exposes you to things more easily.”

Bela: yeah

Speaker 2: “An example will be the way people dress on social media and how people follow the
trends, and it will never end. It’s like a competition that will never end.”

Speaker 3: “I feel like social media is like a different world.”

Speaker 2: “like people take pictures in air forces outside the Dior shop to show a lifestyle that they
can live up to.”

Bela: “I feel like people just do it for the clout”

Speaker 3: “That’s so true! Like on social media you get Instagram models, and you have real life
models that do get as much recognition anymore.”

Speaker 6: “your right.”

Speaker 1: “Especially on social media when people talk about other people’s appearance which
creates low self-esteem.”

Speaker 3: “Especially on Tiktok.”

Speaker 1: “They even mock disabilities.”

Bela: The next question is how is cyber bullying different from in person bullying?

Speaker 4: “I can’t talk about cyber bullying because I’ve never experience that but I can talk about
in person bullying, For example, in my old the school the teachers were aware of it but they didn’t
do nothing about it and sometimes you can go to a teacher and they suspend the bully but that’s not
enough. Which doesn’t really stop them.”

Speaker 6: “One thing adult always say if your being bullied online, the classic thing is just don’t go
online. Whereas if your being bullied in person adults are not used to the social media world so they
can’t comprehend how a couple of comments online can make someone feel so bad.”

Speaker 4: “Even if you don’t go in social media, it will still follow you somehow..”

Speaker 1: “I feel like in person bullying is more real Like someone can say something to you on
social media but if they come to you in person, it will hit more differently.”

Speaker 6: “But what about the factor of social media things can go viral. Like one person can say
something to you but millions and millions of people will see it and they will tag along.”

Speaker 1: “Yeah that’s so true.”

Bela: “Yes I agree.”

Bela “And its easier for people to join the crowd because you are anonymous, and no will know its
really you.”

Speaker 2 “Like image someone is saying the rudest things about you, and you don’t even know
what they look like. They will feel protected.”

Speaker 3: “Exactly.”

Bela: Next question is what can people do to stop cyber bullying?

Speaker 6: Say you're on Instagram try to limit the people that you're following and the people that
are following you. Keep your account private

Bela: You shouldn’t follow the crowd.

Speaker 7: Don’t follow people you don’t know.

Speaker 6: If you follow someone on Instagram, they have to follow you back right.

Bela: Yeah, they do but, if your account is not on private then you don’t really have an option.

Speaker 6: So, it's all about privacy in the first place. What else?

Speaker 3: Even if you were to block them some people make a new account to try and find a way to
bully you.

Speaker 4: For example, when I was on YouTube, I was going through the comment. Someone said
something that wasn’t even negative and the whole crowd came for that one person.

Bela: Yeah, that’s like twitter. If you say the wrong thing about a celebrity, they will eat you alive!

Bela: What would you like to ask a cyber bully?

Speaker 7: what do you gain out of it?

Speaker 4: Are you targeting people because your upset with your own life?

Bela: Are you bored?

Speaker 3: I feel like they are insecure, so you need to make sure that they are alright.

Speaker 2: Some people are just spiteful not even insecure. Like they don’t have a reason.

Speaker 7: People take their anger out on other people, but they don’t realise the effect it has on the
victim.

Bela: So, the last question is, what type of questions or things should be on a cyber bullying advert
to show awareness to the audience?

Speaker 4: A question to people that are doing the bullying.

Speaker 7: Some people think cyber bullying is easier to get way with, so they don’t really care about
the consequences.

Speaker 6: Maybe you can highlight the effects.

Bela: Maybe you can have a threat.

Speaker 6: What if you were targeting the victim of cyber bullying?

New guest: Ways to support.

Speaker 2: You can make a hotline, but no one uses that anymore.

Speaker 2: I've realised that social media has become the new hotline. I say this because people will
take advice from strangers.
