CHURCH BOOKS ONLINE, MATRIKULA SEARCH

Trying to put together some additional tools, advice on how to search church records on Matrikula.
Majority of the stuff has already been written down, in the files, announcements or in the group posts. But
anyway. I'll try to update it with your Q and advice from members.

VILLAGE TO PARISH

It is not enough to know which village or town your ancestor was born in. You have to know the parish in
order to search the books of that parish. Parishes of archdiocese Maribor have all included villages listed in
the description, so you just have to enter the name of the village and the parish will show up.

Eg: here the village I'm looking for is Levec, belongs to parish Žalec.

Parishes of archdiocese Ljubljana don't include list of settlements …. yet.

Check the files of this group for Bojan's tool, named:

Or search for the village on Matrikula map and locate the closest parish:

If you don't find the marriage of your ancestor's parents in the parish where the child was born, search for it
in the neighbouring parishes.
Next to the list of books there is a map, click View full map and you will see all parishes that are close to your
parish:

Many church books of archd.Ljubljana are not marked suitably. Some indexes are marked as baptism book,
years are duplicated etc. OPEN the book and check the first and last page and some pages inside to see what
it really includes.

Status Animarum / Family books are not online and will not be.
LANGUAGES USED
Church books are written in Slovene (second half of 19.century), German (from end of 18.century on ), Latin
prior to that. Hungarian in NE part of Slovenia and Italian in SW part of Slovenia.

German writing that you can't read is German Kurenta. In the files search for
GermanKurrentLetters.pdf

NAMES OF PLACES
You will find German names of places in Slovenia. Easiest way to find out what is Slovene name of the village
that you've found listed in one of the church books of the parish is to search for it on the Mapire map.

Once you enter Mapire map, turn on synchronized view and choose one of the base maps. Those are modern
day maps. You can enter a Slovene name of the village in the search box too. And you can change historical
map in the upper right corner where it says More maps.

WHICH PLACE
When entering place of birth/death/marriage in your family tree I would advise you to write down the parish
too. For genealogy purpuses the village and its connection to the parish is more important than municipality
or region.
There are many places in Slovenia with the same name. Dolenja vas being one of those.
Check maps on Geopedia, many places that no longer exist are still listed on those maps:

Address/residence listed on marriage record is usually the current address of the bride or groom, not his birth
place. If his birth place is not listed under his name or next to parents' names look at the witnesses, where they
come from. It might help.

Latest list of books that are kept at the Maribor archives. Maps are included and also Status Animarum records
(which villages are included and which years are covered).

This is a list od church books and other documents of all Slovene parishes that existed in 1975. Some of those
records are still at the parishes, many were 'lost' over the years.
