Title: The Truth behind people not taking the COVID-19 Vaccine

Abstract: COVID-19 is the disease that changed how everyone started the decade, it changed how we
schooled, worked, and even enjoyed our pass times. Throughout the years of its existence, we have
been able to develop a vaccine to fight against this disease. But people refuse to take the vaccine, which
is why we ask what’s their reason. To answer this question, you must first look at the numbers. The
numbers indicate that there are still a lot of people who haven’t been vaccinated, specifically, in such
states as Alabama, have higher percentage of unvaccinated people, according to CDC’s online tracker. In
other states however, such as Maryland, the percentage of unvaccinated people is lower. Looking at
these numbers, why are these percentages so high? Such influencers, like athletes, like Kyrie Irving has
stated his opinions about the vaccine. This is just one factor that is deterring people from taking the
vaccine. From articles and other media, they state that people don’t want to take the vaccine because
they lack time, don’t trust the government, and so on. But that is only one side, what about the people?
The people’s perspective came from interviews that can be found in Fox and NBC news. In these
interviews, people believe that the vaccine is too new, and they don’t trust it. Others says that they
know people who got COVID, even though they’re vaccinated. This information and understanding of
what people believe answers the question why people refuse to take the COVID vaccine.

Research Question: Why are people refusing to take the COVID Vaccine?

Key Words: COVID-19, vaccine, population, media, influence, Kyrie Irving, Arron Rodgers, percentage

Feedback: Throughout the semester I was met with a lot of challenges while doing this project. I initially
had a completely different topic, however through circumstances, I changed it. Those Circumstances
were the start of the NBA season and my friend’s mom dying from COVID. During opening night of the
NBA season, Kyrie Irving was not present due to his refusal to get the COVID vaccine. This raised the
question of why didn’t he. Throughout my research, I broadened it to why people in the US also refused
to take the vaccine. I documented my research, by making a word document that I kept the websites I
visited, when I visited, what I searched, and a brief description of what information the website had.
This information was used to make the poster session power point that I will be presenting on
December 6th 2021. This opportunity to finally do research on a topic that isn’t engineering related gave
me a new found appreciation of what this process does and what it takes to research. Though I
definitely had a few hardships, especially when I was trying to find the people’s perspective. Specifically
finding interviews. These Interviews were hard to find, but once I met with the peer counselor, she
helped me find all the sources I needed. This really gave me the final touch I needed to make this project
complete in my eyes. In the end, the one thing I would have probably done differently was to meet with
the peer counselor again beforehand, so I could have done some of this research faster and more
efficiently. But other than that, I feel that I was able to gain everything I wanted from this experience.
