Accusations Against Major Companies
Everyday millions of workers are dragged
to sweatshops to provide the world with
the latest Nike shoe, or a new cup of coffee
brought to your local Starbucks. However,
many Americans often overlook how these
products find their way to local stores.
Having the latest trend in your local
Walmart or Target is convenient for
everyone, but how do these products reach
the shelves? Let’s take Nike for example,
as of 2019 Nike and other popular brands,
were accused by the media and human
rights advocates of having supply chain
ties to human rights violations of the
Uyghur people Xinjiang, China.
Nevertheless, this is not a new problem
with Nike Inc. Accusations against Nike
using sweatshops to produce the latest
activewear and sneakers has stemmed
since the 1970s.
This means Nike is neglecting human
rights daily without adhering to the
consequences. What would the world be if
we allowed every company to operate with
these conditions? Awareness is key to
stopping these companies and providing
help to those suffering under these
conditions.
