Document Development Exposition: Workplace Correspondence

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
Coming into this assignment, I had one idea in mind of how it should look. I planned to use my
audience as the compliance office that is in the EPA. The problem would be the increasing number of
invasive species in wetlands and the solution is to enforce stricter fines and inspections of ports. I
started off on the idea of me being a source from outside of the company.

First Draft (for peer editing)

The first draft was fairly challenging in the way that I had to determine the approach needed for the
assignment. I ended up putting the perspective of an outside company speaking to the EPA. I
explained the occurring problem and how I hope to rid the issue for the future. I wanted to make
sure I introduced background information to support my claims and to enhance the idea of the
solution in the document.

Second Draft (for your packet)

For the second draft, I did not do many edits. I changed the ending to a nice close with a plain
signature and “business” name. I would say the second draft had no challenge as I was blinded by my
original words. I went through just to ensure the wording made sense for my approach of a business
speaking to the EPA in terms of an action needed.

Final Draft (for your portfolio)

The final draft was a major change from my original drafts. I had the realization that I completely
misunderstood the assignment. Instead of being from an outside source, I placed myself in the
company, EPA, as another office within the agency. I reworded the body of each document to state
the partnership between my office and theirs. Rather than it being a request from a citizen, it
became an official meeting to discuss the reasoning behind the problem and ways we can work
together to ensure it is solved.
