HLTH 1240 Reflection

Kristina Alviar

In this class I really learned the benefits of meditation. I really enjoyed having actual

practices because it held me accountable for actually participating. This class really

helped me out in this time in my life, and having no time to really ground myself. This

class helped me to recognize the value in coping skills. I got to recognize my thoughts

and learn from them. Lately I have felt out of my head a little bit, and not feeling stable. I

have been really irritable while also being very busy. Having frequent informal practices

has really helped me get through each day and helps me to be more mindful. I will

definitely be doing this in the future. I also took World Religions this semester and in

some units we talked about meditation. It was interesting learning about similarities

even though I know meditation is definitely not just a religious practice. I enjoyed being

able to practice something that another culture practices often. In our book we read

“Wherever you go, There you are by Jon Kabat-Zinn,” it talked about ways of being

mindful through meditation. Being mindful does not necessarily have to involve

meditation but it can be a strong tool. I enjoyed the chapter Non-Judging because it tells

you that you shouldn’t over criticize yourself. That’s what I have been working on in both

meditation and in real life.
