1.Select the lightest W-shape for a column to support a service loads of DL= 405 KN and LL= 500 KN.
The member is 8.25 m long and is pinned at the ends. It is supported in the weak direction at a point
3.65 m from the top. Fy= 345 MPa and Fu= 450 MPa. Use LRFD.
2. The given frame is unbraced, and bending is about the x-axis of each member. The axial service DL
supported by the column is 1800 KN, and the axial service LL= 2400 KN. Fy= 345 MPa (50 ksi). Use
ASD.
a). Determine Kx for member AB. Use the stiffness reduction factor if required.
b). Check the adequacy of column AB. K y= 1.0
3. Three plates (14 mm and 16 mm in thickness) are welded to a W10 x 49 to form a built-up shape as
shown. KxLx= KyLy= 7.6 m and Fy= 345 MPa, compute the design strength for LRFD. (35%)
