Some people said it was an extraordinary stunt but others just called it a non-event. Thirty-
year-old American stuntman David Blaine spent forty-two days in a glass box suspended high
over the River Thames near Tower Bridge in London. During that time he did nothing. He
couldn’t eat or move. He just drank water, which came into his box through a plastic tube. For
company he took a photograph of his mother, a diary, and one change of clothes.
Blaine’s idea was to show that you can survive in even the most difficult circumstances – so
long as you believe in what you are doing. Blaine had lots of fans – mostly teenage girls –
who came to watch him every day. Some of them got up at five o’clock in the morning to see
him before they went to school. But lots of people were not so appreciative. Some people
threw eggs at the box, while others tried to tempt him by holding cheeseburgers where he
could see them.
Forty-two days after he stepped into the box, Blaine came out, helped by friends, who took
him to hospital for tests. He had lost about twenty kilos in weight, but he was in a good mood.
‘I have learned more in that box than I have learned in years.’ he told journalists. ‘I have
learned how strong human beings are’. When asked what he thought about while he was in
the box, Blaine said he spent the time imagining he was building a house, piece by piece. It
was a beautiful and very positive experience.
