Between 1962 and 1984 the International Academy for Production Engineering
Research C.I.R.P., headquartered in Paris, issued a trilingual dictionary of pro-
duction engineering in English, French and German consisting of the following
volumes:
Vol. 1 Forging, drop forging
Vol. 2 Grinding, surface roughness
Vol. 3 Sheet metal forming
Vol. 4 Fundamental terms of cutting
Vol. 5 Cold extrusion and upsetting
Vol. 6 Planing, slotting, broaching, turning
Vol. 7 Drilling, countersinking/boring, reaming, tapping
Vol. 8 Milling, sawing, gear manufacturing
Vol. 9 Electrochemical, electro-discharge, electronic, laser, and chemical machining
Not surprisingly, terms are sometimes interpreted differently in their conceptual
contexts in the three languages and thus in the corresponding linguistic areas.
The dictionary took account of this by including both definitions of the terms and,
in some cases, explanatory illustrations. In this way, C.I.R.P. realized one of its
fundamental aims, i.e. to enable correct translation of production engineering
terms and thus to contribute to a clear, unambiguous professional communica-
tion in the three languages. Later, Volume 1 was extended to Danish, Finnish,
Norwegian and Swedish (Volume 1N), as well as to Italian, Spanish and Portu-
guese (Volume 1R). Additionally, Volumes 1–9 were recently expanded to
Chinese.
Today, manufacturing and production engineering is undergoing an enormous
innovation process worldwide. New technologies are being deployed; manufac-
turing strategies are constantly changing; as a consequence thereof, global pro-
duction networks and supply chains are created. International co-operation is
quickly developing thereby increasing the importance of communication and the
need for a unified technical terminology. At the same time, the technical vocabu-
lary in this engineering domain experiences significant expansion. From 1997
C.I.R.P. has been taking account of these developments by introducing a second
edition of its Dictionary of Production Engineering in English, French and
German. This edition is characterized by a considerable expansion of the number

of terms and a new structure. Compared to the latter editions, definitions are now
provided for all terms while illustrations are added for better understanding.
– Vol. 1/I and 1/II ‘‘Metal Forming’’
– Vol. 2 ‘‘Material Removal Processes’’
– Vol. 3 ‘‘Manufacturing Systems’’
have already been published.
This current volume (Vol. 4) on ‘‘Assembly’’ addresses a central part in
production engineering, namely the organizations in the manufacturing industry
in which the product is finished or ‘‘the gateway to the customer’’. During
assembly all the mistakes being made upstream e.g. by the design department,
the machine shop or logistics may hinder the assembly operations. With more
than 1,000 terms the volume not only deals with the technical details of assembly
and its corresponding machinery and equipment but also considers relevant
issues involved in planning, developing and deploying assembly systems. The
topics include; the operation of those organizations; the handling and flow of
materials in production, the organization, planning and control of the work to be
done in the system as well as quality management and the economical aspects of
production such as investments, cost, capacity, time, etc. Accordingly, Vol. 4 is
structured as follows:
– General terms
– Assembly system
– Assembly process
– Assembly organization
– Assembly planning
– Assembly operation
The C.I.R.P. dictionary does not claim to create direct terminological standards. It
rather tries to perceive state-of-the-art terminology in the industrial production
domain and make it available in a systematic, user-oriented form. During the
preparation of Vol. 4 it was found that a number of technical terms are sometimes
used differently and inconsistently in literature. The conceptual extension of these
terms is clearly different in some features. However, they are frequently used as
synonyms. The term ‘‘Bonding’’ represents e.g. a glaring example how similar terms
are literally used in different languages although they represent different technical
meanings. The act of ‘‘Bonding’’ in English corresponds to ‘‘Verbindung durch
Stoffschluss’’ (intimate contact between surfaces resulting from either cohesion or
adhesion) in German and ‘‘Assemblage par cohésion ou adhésion’’ in French. How-
ever, it is a common mistake in German to apply the term ‘‘Bonden’’ as the literal
translation of ‘‘Bonding’’ in English, since it denotes a different process in the
semiconductor industry. A further challenge was the compound nouns conveniently

Bd. 1 Schmieden - Freiformschmieden, Gesenkschmieden
Bd. 2 Schleifen, Oberflächenrauheit
Bd. 3 Blechbearbeitung
Bd. 4 Grundbegriffe des Spanens
Bd. 5 Kaltfließpressen und Kaltstauchen
Bd. 6 Hobeln, Stoßen, Räumen, Drehen
Bd. 7 Bohren, Senken, Reiben, Gewindefertigen
Bd. 8 Fräsen, Sägen, Verzahnen
Bd. 9 Elektrochemisches, elektroerosives, elektronisches, photonisches (Laser)
Hierdurch ver-
wirklichte C.I.R.P ein wichtiges Anliegen, nämlich sachlich einwandfreie Über-
trägt seit 1997 dieser Entwicklung durch Erarbeitung einer 2. Auflage ihrer
Wörterbuchreihe in deutscher, englischer und französischer Sprache Rech-
nung. Diese ist durch eine deutliche Erweiterung des Umfangs und eine neue
Struktur gekennzeichnet. Sämtliche Begriffe sind jetzt mit Definitionen
