“Social Media: The Cause of Narcissism”

Fresh from the bed, get your phone, take a selfie, choose the best filter, type #WOKE UP
LIKE THIS, or FEELING GOOD TODAY. But wait, let me put some winking face and a heart
emoji. Done!. I just need to hit that post button, and there you go. My life is now all-over my
followers, the country, and even the world.

Let me ask you something, do you feel happy every time someone likes your photo? Do you
even wait for the flood likes and comments to come? We can’t change the fact that humans are
now socially connected through technology and tend to get different feelings digitally.

media worldwide. 92% of adolescents aged 13 to 17 go online daily,

Social media is ever-evolving platform we had. It allows us to promote businesses, share


ideas & thoughts, and SEEK FOR ATTENTION and SYMPATHY. Examples of this are the
famous Facebook (like the diary of life) and Instagram (our lifetime photobook). Platforms that
allow us to connect to other people displaying what we all have. These algorithms control our
lives, behaviors and dictate us when to be happy or sad.

YES! By looking at other people’s content, downward comparison (thinking others are
worse off), and seeing yourself as an important factor that is always needed to be seen and
known by other people, involve the degree of what we call, GRANDIOSE FEELINGS OF
SELF-IMPORTANCE, THE NEED FOR POWER OR ADMIRATION, ENTITLEMENT,
AND SELF-ABSORPTION, all falling under the umbrella of NARCISSISM

Research says that narcissists develop over time as the frequency of posts increases.
Truly, every post we had is equivalent to how many likes, loves, comments we will give and
receive, affecting one’s behavior and well-being. Yes! Social Media is the cause of narcissism

But please do remember that you are free to post what you want and express yourself
differently. Though, manage the information you are posting to the public. Focus on the main
goals of sharing, inspiring, and informing. And break the mentality of posting something just to
be the center of attraction, exert power, , and intimidate others.
