Let a transversal section is consist of: a plate that has a width of 150,9

mm and a height of 10 mm, L bar № 4 and Channel № 14 (Fig. 1).

Fig.1

The calculation of moments of inertia about central axis.

Let us determinate the moments of inertia for the rectangle:

b  h3 13 15,09
I x2    1,26 сm4;
12 12
b3  h 15,093 1
I y2    286,34 сm4.
12 12

For a Channel and a L Bar the moments of inertia about their central
axes are discharged from the tables of properties of Rolled-Steel Shapes.
For Channel we have:
I x1  45,4 сm4; I y1  491 сm4.

Due to L Bar allocation scheme the moments of inertia about its

central axis are as follows:
I x3  I y3  3,55 сm4.

Determine the moments of inertia of the section about to the central

axes by the formulas:
I xc    I xc  yc2  Ai  ; I yc    I yc  xc2  Ai  .
 i i   i i 
Then we get:

 
I xc  45,4   3,442 15,6  1,26  2,862 15,09  
 3,55  4,452  2,35  404,7 cm ; 4

 
I yc  45,4  7452 15,6  286,34   0,22 15,09  
 3,55  6,2552  2,35  882,09 cm . 4

The product of inertia about the central axes is given by the formula:

I xc yc    I xc yc  xc yc  Ai  ,
 i i i i 
Note that a rectangle, a channel have a symmetry axis, and therefore
the product of inertia about these axes is zero. For the L Bar we get:

1,47  5,63
I x2 y 2    2,08 cm4.
2

After that we obtain:

I xc yc   0,745 3,44 15,6  2,86   0,2 15,09 

 2,08  6,255  4,45  2,35  98,84 cm4.
