1. A Tensile test is performed on a Brass specimen 10mm in diameter using a

gag length of 50mm. when the tensile load P reaches a value of 20kN,
The distance between the gag marks has increased by 0.122mm a. What
is the modulus of elasticity E of the Brass b. If the diameter
decreases by 0.0083mm, Determine the Poisson’s Ratio

(d) =10mm

(L) length = 50mm

P = 20kn

Δ = 0.122mm

Δd= 0.0083mm

𝟐𝟎 𝐱 𝟏𝟎𝟑 𝐧
Axial stress (r) = P/A = 𝛑 = 254.6 MPa
𝐱(𝟏𝟎)𝟐
µ

Axial strain (E) = Δ/L 0.122/50 = 0.00240

Modules of elasticity

E = Ɉ/Ȝ = 254.6MPa/0.002440 = 104 GPa

Poisson’s ratio

D = leteral stress/ longitudinal stress = Δd/d / Δ/L = Δd/d x L/ Δ

= 0.00830x50/10 x 0.122 = 0.34

2. A Steel rod having a cross-sectional area of 300mm 2 and a length of

150m is suspended vertically from one end. It supports a tensile load of 20kN
at the lower end. If the unit mass of steel is 7850 kg/m 3 and E= 200x103
MN/M 2 , find the total elongation of the rod.

δ1=PLAE Where:

P = W = 7850(1/1000)3(9.81)[300(150)(1000)] Thus,
δ2=20000(150000)300(200000)

P = 3465.3825 N δ2=50 mm

L = 75(1000) = 75 000 mm

A = 300 mm2

E = 200 000 MPa

Where:

Thus, P = 20 kN = 20 000 N

δ1=3465.3825(75000)300(200000) L = 150 m = 150 000 mm

δ1=4.33 mm A = 300 mm2

δ2=PLAE E = 200 00 Mpa
