Major: ____BSME 3-A____________ Date: ____November 8 2021____________

As in Fig. 1-11c, a hole is to be punched out of a plate having a shearing strength of 40 MPA.

The compressive stress in the punch is limited to 50 MPA.

(a) Compute the maximum thickness of plate in which a hole 35 mm in diameter can be

punched.

(b) If the plate is 15 mm thick, determine the diameter of the smallest hole that can be

punched. (c) if there are 3 plates stack against each other with 25 mm thick each, find the

minimum value of P for it to penetrate the plates using a 30 mm diameter puncher

(d) using the value of P in question (c) what is the area of the puncher for it to not exceed its

compressive stress

ANSWER

A) Based on puncher strength:

𝟐
Ts= P/A
Tc = 𝑷⁄𝝅𝒅 ⁄𝟒
P=Ts π dt

P= 50 (π(0.0352))/ 4 0.048=(40) π(0.035)t

T= 0.048/40 π(0.035)
P= 0.0048 MN T= 0.011m

B) Smallest hole that can be punched

TcA = Ts A
50(πdt/4) = 40 (π d(0.015)
D= 40(π(0.015))/50 (π/d)
d= 0.048m
C) 3 plate stack
T= 3x25mm = 75mm
t=0.075 m d=0.030m
Ts=p/ πdt
P= 40 π(0.030)(0.075) P
= 0.28MN

D.) using the value of P in question (C)

Tc = P/A
A= P/Tc = 0.28/50
A=0.0056m2
