Assignment Test-II (SEC:A,B & C)
Subject: APPLIED THERMODYNAMICS-II

1. A single row impulse turbine develops 132 kW at a blade speed of 175 m/sec using 2 kg of steam per

sec. Steam leaves the nozzle at 400 m/sec. Velocity coefficient of the blades is 0.9. Steam leaves the

turbine blades axially. Determine nozzle angle, blade angles at entry and exit.

(CO-3, L-5)

2. In a reaction turbine mean blade speed is 150 m/s. Blade steam speed ratio is 0.62, the outlet angles

of nozzle and moving blades are 200 and 300 respectively. assuming axial discharge and absolute

velocity of steam entering nozzles is equal to the absolute velocity of steam leaving the moving

blades. Calculate (a) degree of reaction (b) diagram efficiency (CO-3, L-5)

3. Explain the working of Edward’s air pump with a neat sketch. (CO-4, L-3)

4. In an open cycle constant pressure gas turbine, air at 1 bar, 30 0C is compressed in low pressure

compressor up to the pressure of 4.5 bar. It is then passed through the intercooler and cooled up to

the temperature of 34 0C. The pressure of the air after the high-pressure compressor is 18 bar.

The temperature gases after the combustion chamber is 1200 0C .Gases expands in HP turbine up to

the pressure of 5.5 bar and heated till the temperature reaches 1000 0C and expands from 5.5 bar to

1 bar in low pressure turbine. The effectiveness of regenerator is 0.8. Assume the LP compressor and

HP compressor efficiencies as 85% and 88% respectively, the HP turbine and LP turbine efficiencies

as 92% and 90% respectively. Calculate the efficiency of gas turbine plant. Take ɤ=1.4 and

Cp =1.005 kJ/KgK. (CO-4, L-5)

5. Explain the working of turbojet engine with neat sketch. (CO-5, L-3)

6. Explain the following for rocket engine.

(i) Pressure feed system (ii) Pump feed system. (CO-5, L-3)
