Structural Design of Octagonal Steel Lighting Columns

Design Standards
· BS EN 40-3-1:2000 Lighting Columns, Design and Verification, Specification for Characteristic Loads
· BS EN 40-3-3:2003 Lighting Columns, Design and Verification, Verification by Calculation
· PD 6547:2004 Guidance on the use of BS EN 40-3-1 and BS EN 40-3-3
· BD 26/99 (*) Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, Design of Lighting Columns
(*) where applicable

· Reference should be made to the above standards and other parts of BS EN 40 to ensure full compliance.

Restrictions of the Program

· Main tapered steel octagonal section column, with short CHS top section.
· Max column height 14m using base and 6no. shaft sections not > 2.0m in height.
· The program is intended to be used on typical UK lighting columns, with typical features and attachments.
· Columns mounted in an elevated location (e.g. on a bridge or building) are not covered - seek specialist advice.
· Columns mounted in exposed locations (e.g. coastal areas, sites subject to local wind funnelling or > 250m
above sea level) are not covered - seek specialist advice.

Program Users
· Familiarity of the user with the above design standards is assumed.
· The program will perform calculations using the data input by the user - it is the responsibility of the user
to ensure that this data is correct and complies with any restrictions laid down in the standards.

General Use of the Program

· A master read-only copy of the program file should be kept, with individual jobs saved under a new filename
if required. Failure to do this may result in the formulas in any overwritten cells being permanently deleted.
· Cell colours indicate the following: yellow - user input data
shaded - auto-calculated by the program, but can be overwritten by user
- care should be taken, as the automatic formulas in these
cells are permanently lost once overwritten.
green - calculated by the program
red - error, often caused by missing data (i.e. required data not
entered in yellow cells)
· Attachment offsets from the column C/L should be entered as positive if on the same side as the bracket
arm (single-arm columns), and negative if on the opposite side. For other columns, either side may be
considered positive and the opposite negative, provided signs are consistent.
· The orientation of the door to the wind ('A' or 'B') can be specified. Default option 'A' is normally the worst
case, and should be left unchanged unless there are specific requirements to the contrary.
· Worksheet tabs can be summarised as follows :
RWF's - Rationalised Wind Factors from PD 6547 (for reference only)
Wind Map - Mean hourly wind speeds (for reference only)
Design Summary - General wind loading data and EN40 / BD26 parameters
Column Data - Details of the lighting column and any attachments, with a summary of EN40 checks
and BD26 fatigue checks (except baseplate)
EN 40 - Detailed checks to EN40 (no input data)
Baseplate (EN40).. - Baseplate design to EN40 (only used if required)
BD 26_99 Fatigue.. - Detailed column checks to BD 26, except baseplate (no input data)
Baseplate (BD26).. - Baseplate design to BD26 (only used if required)
