Chapter 2

Methodology

This chapter will cover the details of the methodology and the procedure of the project

which includes the participant, initial preparation phase, the preparation phase, and the post-

preparation of the product.

Participant

The participant is a member of the Bukidnon indigenous community and is currently

working at Bukidnon Provincial Medical Center. The participant also resides at Kalasungay,

Malaybalay City and she is known to have skills, knowledge and expertise regarding with

numerous traditional herbal medicines. The knowledge of the traditional health practices she

possesses was passed down through oral tradition from generations to generations. She also

observes and practices these traditional herbal medicines in their household. In addition, she is

knowledgeable to a various types of traditional herbal medicine such as panyawan, manika and

tanglad herbal medicine.

Initial Preparation Phase

The researchers decided to use tanglad or lemongrass as the subject of the study since it is

convenient to find and the researchers can identify the plant. Hence, the researchers initially

asked permission to the interviewee if it is allowed to use their tanglad herbal tea procedure for

research purposes.

Preparation Phase

The procedure during the making of the tanglad as herbal tea as it follows: (1) Pound or

cut about 3-7 stalks and leaves of tanglad, (2) then add in 2 cups of boiling water for 10 to 15

minutes, (3) strain, add sugar and a slice of ginger to taste, (4) let it cool and drink a cup three to

four times a day, (5) make new tanglad herbal tea as needed.

Post-preparation Phase

After doing the procedure, the researchers poured the tanglad herbal tea in the tea pot and

disposed the tanglad properly. The researchers then washed the used material and cleaned the

area where they have done the procedure. Afterwards the researchers documented the results of

the preparation of the tanglad herbal tea.
