Q. According to Castiglione, what are the dominant qualities a courtier should possess apart from
nobility of birth? Your answer should be restricted to Book 1.

In addition to being of noble birth, the courtier must be skilled in combat. The courtier should
display his courage on the field and be humble and modest at all times. The courtier should be
attractive in body and face and have air and grace that make him captivating and appealing. He
should be well versed in skills like weapon handling, wrestling, horsemanship and hunting and
has a liking for sports. More importantly he should be graceful without being displaying the
obvious effort put in by him. He should possess the virtue of nonchalance and be a practitioner of
sprezzatura.

The qualities a courtier possess should make him so prefect that the price who he serves, even
though his dominion is small, can count himself a truly great ruler.
