Line 3 T1: Today, we are going to talk about our story, long ago and far away. And our question
of the day, is our world the same as it was long ago? What’s our question?
Line 5 T1: Now, before we get into all of that. Let’s review our background knowledge word.
All right. I’m thinking of a word that means something that you do when you’re looking to be
occupied, to relax. Do you remember what word that was? Which bababa. Whisper that answer
in your hand. This is something you do, we said watching TV, going shopping, you could be
reading a book, something you do for fun to relax. Who remembers what the word is? Whisper
Line 8 T1: Paintball is one of the things we do for… entertainment. Remember we said it’s
something that do to relax. Now, this is the word, It’s not happening now, and it’s not happening
a couple of days from now. It happened already. What’s the word? Oh—whisper the answer in
your hand. It happened, yesterday? It happened over a century ago. It’s not the present, it’s not
Line 9 S: Past!
Line 10 T1: It’s the past! Good job! This word, it happened 100 years ago. Do you remember? It
happened one—oh. I see hands up already. It happened 100 years ago. It has that soft C sound in
the beginning. Do you remember what it was? It happened 100 years ago. Do you remember?
What that word is? You don’t remember? If you remember, blow that answer in your hand.
What’s that word for when it happened over 100 years ago? Release.
Line 11 S: Century!
Line 12 T1: Century. Do you remember the word? What’s the word?
Line 16 T1: Well, not just a long time ago. How many years ago? Over one
Line 19 T1: And talk to your partner, is the world the same as it was long ago? What has
Line 20 S: No!
Line 22 S: No!
Line 24 S: No!
Line 25 T: No! Talk to your partner, how has things changed since a long time ago? How—Got
it? Go.
(Chatter)
Line 33 T: No.
(Chatter)
Line 36 T: Hocus-Pocus!
Line 38 T: I’ve heard some great answers. Who wants to share to us how things have changed
since long ago? Remember, we’re gonna listen to repeat. Joseph, how has things change since a
Line 42 T: In the past, there were no telephones. I like what Joseph said. Let’s repeat.
Line 43 T&S: In the past, there were no telephones. Good Job.
Line 45 T: So, we’re going to read our story today. We’re gonna do a picture walk first and make
predictions. And then we’re gonna flip, and we’re gonna have our graphic organizer to take note.
So open up your book. Let’s make some predictions about what our story’s gonna be about.
Line 46 T: show me fireworks when your book is open to the story. What page is our story start
on?
Line 47 S: 75.
Line 50 T: Open up to page 75. Open up to page 75. And do a picture walk, let’s make a
prediction about what we think our story’s gonna be about. Go ahead and flip through the book.
What do you think the story’s going to be about? Look at each page. Look at the page. What’s
happening?
Line 51 T: pay attention. Joseph’s ready. Mohammed’s ready. Let’s look at this page. I can tell
already that this is not even a picture on this page. This is—what is it? It’s a—what we do in Art
class. It’s a—
Line 60 S: No.
Line 61 T: No.
Line 62 T: the first picture. Is this the past? Present? Or future? Wait, this first picture, look at it.
there’s no camera. It’s not a picture, it’s a painting. So, we have three choices, past? Present? Or
future? Hold the answer in your hand. What is that first picture? Is it long ago? Over a century
ago? In the past? Is this picture happening now? Look at the details. Do you have those things
Line 64 T1: look at there, close. Is this happening, past? Present? Or future? Release.
Line 65 S: Past!
Line 68 T1: Now, let’s look at the picture on the other side of our book. There’s a big difference.
First, it’s a picture that was taken with a camera. There’s a board game. There’s sorft—soft
couches. Look at the way that the people are dressed. There’s lots of differences between the two
pictures. Is the second picture past, present or future? Blow the answer in your hand. Is the
second picture, past, present or future? Does that look like where you live right now? This
picture right here, does that look where you live or will live—well, put your answers in your
hand. Is that past? Hold it up high. Show me that you know your answer. Show me that you’re a
hundred and 51 days smarter. Good job. Our second picture, past, present, or future? Release.
Line 70 T1: It could be the future, but it’s happening now. It’s happening in the present. If it
happens in the future, we would see things that they haven’t invented yet like, maybe the couch
Line 71 S: A robot!
Line 72 T1: A robot, right? But this is happening now. It could be the future, but if it was the
future, there would be some other things like robots and something that is floating around.
Line 73 T1: so, talk to your partner, talk about “what do you see that is different between the two
pictures?” what’s different about the way the lady is cooking in the past, and then, the way we
(Chatter)
Line 74 T1: In the past—use your words—in the past. Well, don’t tell me, tell her.
(Chatter)
Line 76 T1: Good job. Who can tell us one difference that they see from the past to the present in
our two pictures? Nice and loud, listen in so you can share. Maria, nice and loud. What’s one
Line 78 T1: Yes, good job. Let’s repeat what Maria said.
Line 81 S: Yeah!
Line 83 T1: So, it looks like she was using what? Something really—that might have been really
dangerous to cook—it’s not as safe as a stove. It looks like she was using what in the stove? –to
Line 85 T1: very good. I like what Mohammed said. Let’s repeat.
Line 87 T1: do we think that’s safe? Thumbs up or thumbs down. Was it safe to—no, I don’t
Line 90 T1: yeah, you can burn yourself. Do we agree with Josiah? Could she have burned
herself?
Line 93 T1: she could burn her hand or she could burn the whole—
Line 94 T1: let’s make our prediction first. Let’s write our prediction. You have your sheet—
hold up your sheet. Your prediction sheet, your name should be on it. We did a picture walk, it
gave us a sentence starter “I think…” what should we say? “I think the story will be about?”
what? I think…
Line 96 t1: you can say past and present. I think the story will be about what, Lauren?
Line 97 S12: I think the story is gonna be about what happened long ago.
Line 98 S13: what happens long ago. One more and then you’re going to start to write. Yes? I
think…
Line 102 T1? Good job. Hands up in the air. Hands up in the air, lets see who’s ready to write.
Alright, go head and make your prediction about what you think the story is gonna be about.
Line 103 T1: About past and present. That’s your prediction? Grab a clipboard and grab a seat on
Line 104 T1: good job. Pencil up in the air when you’re ready to write. Show me that you’re
ready to write. Pencil up in the air. Beginning, middle and end. Okay we are using our ears, and
when I say so you can take up your pencil and then jot down notes about our story so we have
Line 108 S14: it talks about uhmm, what happened in the past and then what happened—what
Line 109 T1: well, the story talks about—I hear somebody talking, not being a good learner. The
story talks about how homes were different. What did it say about the past? In the past,
Line 110 T1: one room. And it says, in the present a house can have?
Line 114 t1: yes. Did you have the plants— your vegetable long ago?
Line 124 T1: Walmart is a grocery store. So let’s write our sentence. This is for—is this our
Line 127 T1: put your pencil in time out so we know that you’re ready? Good job. We’re gonna
show Mr. Meyers our syllable walks, so put your pencil in time out. And stand on up, stand on
up.
--
Line 150 T1: let’s do our driving game. What do we do when we hit a period?
Line 151 S: Prrrt!
Line 154 T1: And what do we do with the exclamation point? Are we reading nonsense words?
Line 155 S: No
Line 158 T1: Finger pointer up in the air. First word is A. What’s the word?
Line 159 S: A
Line 161 S & T: A long time ago, homes have just one room.
Line 163 S & T1: People ate and slept in the same room. Prrrt! Today, homes can have many
rooms. Prrrt!
Line 164 T1: Good job! Turn the page. Good job! Good job! Do you wanna do our mice?
Line 166 T1: We’re gonna read like quiet church mice. Finger pointer following along as we
read. When you’re done reading, put your hands on your head show me that you’re ready.
wants us to do the nutty professor reading. Ready? Finger pointer up in the air! Land on the first
Line 171 T1: Good job! You guys are doing great – I’m gonna give you a point. Give yourself a
cheer.
Line 173 T1: Our gesture. Let’s show Mr. Meyers how we read with gestures when we’re partner
reading, okay? Remember, at the end of the sentence, we’re gonna do a gesture to add up to what
we just read. Let’s go! Finger pointer up in the air. The first word is back. What’s the word?
Line 176 S & T: Back then, kids help out a lot. A boy helped his dad plant crops.
Line 177 T1: How do you do when you’re planting? Har – I like that too Ben. Good job go, let’s
go!
Line 178 S & T: A girl helped her mom inside the home
Line 179 T1: You can sew, you can cook, you can make a cake. Good job!
Line 180 S &T: She made soft socks and hats. It takes a long time to make those things.
Line 181 T1: You can make sewing – You can – Good job! You can do a lot. Good job! Finger
Line 182 T1: I’m gonna show you your small group work.
Line 183 S16: Five minutes’ chair. Fingers closed. So I know you’re paying attention. All right,
let’s see who’s paying attention. Good job. Fingers locked, show me that you’re ready, sitting
just like Maria, just like Josiah, just like Mohammed, just like Gwenjen. Your first center, this is
really cool, for boys and girls. There’s two books you’re gonna look through—cars from the past
and cars from the present. You’re gonna observe and analyze the pages and write down your
observations, right? You’re gonna say how cars look like in the past and how they look like in
the present. So, remember, we talked about how cars have changed—before they had cars, they
used horses. Look how different they are. Do cars look like that today?
Line 185 T1: I know. And you’re gonna get to look through these whole—both of this books and
record your observations, back here. And then the next one, we’re gonna work hard on our
dictionary skills, you have the word past and you have the word future. You’re gonna look the
words up, you’re gonna write the definition,, and then you’re gonna draw “What does the future
look like to you?”—remember when I said, the future we’ll probably gonna have—what in the
Line 187 T1: Robots. We’ll probably gonna have cars that not drive, they…
Line 188 S: Fly. Float.
Line 189 T1: Fly or float, right? So that’s what the future—that’s what the future looks like to
you. You can come back here, and do that. And then, with me up here, we’re gonna compare, use
our textbooks to compare and contrast things that happened—like the homes in the past, like the
home in the present, and some things that are the same. So, do we still cook? Do we stop cooking
in the present?
Line 191 T1: No, its just easier in the present. We still cook because we still have to what?
Line 193 T1: Eat. Alright, turn—hold up your graphic organizer and turn to the last page. The
last page where we have to write our opinion. Show me that you’re ready to write your opinion
about living in the past or the present. I see Josiah's ready. Kira's ready. Nicholas is ready.
Line 194 T1: Good job. Good job. Show me that you’re ready. Did we talk about “Is the world
Line 202 T1: Did we write our opinion? That’s what we’re going to do now. Are we gonna write
our opinion?
Line 204. T1: Yeah, we’re gonna write our opinion whether we like to live in the past or the
present. You, guys, did such good job. You already earned points. Are you gonna earn another
Line 208 T1: Alright, good job. Go ahead and get started on writing your opinion graphic
organizer. Would you like to live in the past? Yes or No, and two reasons. Go ahead.
