PROCEDURE
Introduction Time

- ST will remind students of the day’s events: gingerbread houses, cookie decorating, 5 minutes
finishing their 3-D shapes for the village, and their Christmas story booklets
- ST will explain that students will complete the first part of the house ornaments, and
while they dry, students decorate their cookies

Body Time

Topic: ST will hand out popsicle sticks and brown paper to students, and together the 5 minutes
class will go through the steps of making the house. The students must put their
name on the back of the paper, and using their liquid glue, will glue down the
popsicle sticks onto the paper.
Students will come up to the front table in groups of three to paint their house with 10 minutes
the brown paint. When they are finished, ST will put all houses to the side counter.

While the houses are drying, students will start to decorate their cookies. ST has 30 minutes
icing colours prepared in different colours, and will cut the tips off of the bags. ST
will demonstrate how to twist the bag and press lightly for the icing to come out.
Extra bags will be nearby ( I have had experiences of these “piping bags” popping
from squeezing too hard).
Students will grab a sheet of wax paper from ST to cover their desks while
decorating. ST will hand out a cookie to each child, and instruct that they will
have to share the different colours.
Candy decorations will be set up at ST’s table, and ST/TA will have the candy in
bowls with plastic spoons to dole out to students (COVID-19 precautions).
Students will decorate their cookies using the icing and candy
When finished, students will let their cookies dry, and grab a sandwich bag to
take their cookies home in their backpack

Students will break for recess 15 minutes

Now that the houses are dry, students will follow the example of the ST in 30 minutes
decorating:
- gluing a brown triangle onto the top of the house
- drawing a red and white peppermint to attach to the doorway
- colouring/cutting out a door
- individually decorating the rest of the house
When students are finished, they will bring the ornaments up to ST at table to hot
glue the string on for the ornament to hang from

Students will receive all unfinished 3-D objects, and will continue to work 30 minutes
on/finish all nets for the village. ST will be at the front table to help students
tape/glue their last edges.

If time allows, students can work on any unfinished writing/colouring of their 30 minutes
Christmas story booklets.

Topic Differentiation:
Weaker:
- ST will help tape 3-D nets, scribe for Christmas stories. They are able to
decorate both crafts
Stronger:
- If finished early, I have another prompt for them to write to add to their
Christmas story booklet (Santa’s Vacation)

Conclusion Time

Students grab their cookies and ornaments to take home, and pack their things to get ready 5 minutes
for home time.

Assessment
ST will review who was able to follow instructions for decorating houses and cookies, the quality of the 3-D nets,
and the quality of writing in Christmas story booklets

Reflection:
Worked well:
- These children were so happy and excited to decorate gingerbread cookies! They made sure to
pay attention so that they didn’t miss out on any of the fun activities we had planned for the day.
They worked well with the time limits, and we were able to get lots of unfinished work done
during these periods
Improvement:
- This was a hectic lesson. We had two activities going on at once. I had wanted to do the
gingerbread cookie and house decorating directly following their writing prompts about
gingerbread men, but next time I would wait and have two different periods set aside for each
activity.
