Diagnostics
 CBC
 Bone marrow aspiration (stem cells are taken)
 Confirmatory test
 This is different from bone biopsy (only done for bone cancer-
osteosarcoma)
 Children: posterior iliac crest (prone position)
 Adult: sternum (supine)
 The complication is bleeding, direct compression for 5 minutes
is done
 CT scan
 UTS of the abdomen (for hepatosplenomegaly)

Management
 Chemotherapeutic drugs
 Vincristine, daunorubicin, prednisone (steroids)
 Harvesting via bone marrow aspiration
 Autologous (from the patient) is best to prevent rejection
 This is frozen
 Transplant via IV, done when there is already (+) infection

Nursing Diagnosis
 Activity intolerance
 Risk for infection
 Monitor temperature
o Low fever: >37.5 degrees celsius (virus, except for dengue
fever)
o High fever: >38.5 degrees celsius (bacterial except for PTB:
presents with low afternoon fever)
 Reverse or protective isolation (protects the patient)
 Avoid fresh vegetables, fruits, flowers (has live organisms)
 Vitamin A, C, E, and zinc to strengthen the body’s immunity
 High protein diet (meats, eggs, and legumes) to increase
immunoglobulins (antibodies) from the B cells
 Risk for injury (d/t bleeding)
