#5 Hooke’s Law

1. What is Hooke’s Law?

Hooke’s law states that the force applied to a spring is proportional to its
extension.

2. What is proportional (P) limit?

The proportional limit (P) is the point beyond which any further increase in the
load applied to a spring will produce an extension that is no longer proportional to
the force .

3. What is elastic limit?

The elastic limit (E) is the point beyond which any further increase in the load
applied 10 a spring will produce a permanent stretch.

4. What is elastic deformation?

Elastic deformation is a change of the shape of the body as a reaction to applied

stress. This deformation is only temporary and once the stress is released, the
undeformed shape of the body is restored

5. What is plastic deformation?

Plastic deformation is defined as a process in which an object due to applied

force changes its size or shape in a way that is not reversible.

6. Sketch graphs of force against extension for each of the following:

7. Why don't elastic rubber bands obey hooke’s law?

Elastic bands do not obey hooke's law. As the force applied is NOT proportional to the
extension of the band. Typically, a fair amount of stress is required on stretching to produce
a small amount of strain...but eventually, less stress is needed for the same amount of strain.
This is because the atoms/bonds in the elastic band have more kinetic/heat energy so can
be extended further.
