#2 Scalars and Vectors

1. What is scalar? A quantity Ihal has only magnitude

2. What are some examples of scalar quantities?

mass, length, time, temperature, area, volume, speed, pressure, distance, work,
energy, power, resistance, current

3. What are vector quantities? A quantity that has magnitude and direction

4. What are some examples of vector quantities?

force, momentum, displacement, velocity, acceleration

5. What are the two methods that can be used to find the resultant force of two
vectors?

• Parallelogram method: The vectors are represented to scale in magnitude and

direction by arrows, starting at the same point and forming the adjacent sides of
a parallelogram. The resultant vector is then represented in magnitude and
direction by the arrow forming the diagonal of the parallelogram originating at the
same point as the vectors being added.

• Polygon method: The vectors are represented in magnitude and direction by

arrows joined head to tail forming a chain. The resultant vector is then
represented to scale by the arrow closing the polygon and originating from the
beginning of the chain.
