COMPREHENSION

Read the passage below.

Florence Nightingale was an English nurse. When she was very young, she
liked to take care of the sick animals belonging to her father's farm workers. At
that time, girls from rich families were more interested in fashion and parties than
anything else. Florence, however, was different. She read about the war in a
country called the Crimea in the newspapers and how the wounded soldiers were
not given proper treatment. Florence decided to help them. She prepared herself by
studying about diseases and learning how to nurse the sick. Her family tried to stop
her, but she had made up her mind. She left England for the Crimea with other
nurses.
The hospital which Florence went to was dirty and had no medical supplies.
Florence and the other nurses cleaned the hospital thoroughly to prevent the
diseases from spreading. The soldiers’ wounds were cleaned and bandaged. They
slept in proper beds and were given clean clothing. After she had returned to
England, she continued nursing and improved hospital conditions.
