The death of kitty Genovese

What happened?

Miss Genovese had finished her job at the bar and had parked her car
opposite the railroad, which was a 100ft from her apartment. However
a man walked towards her and she nervously went to the call box to
call the police. The attacker stabbed her and she screamed. The lights
when on in the 10 story apartment and someone shouted “leave her
that girl alone!” the attacker shrugged and walked away. When Miss
Genovese got up, to attempt to get to her apartment, the killer
returned and stabbed her again. This time she screamed “im dying,”
she was found slumped dead on the stairs of the apartment.

What was the psychology behind no one helping?

There are many factors that give us the answer to this question: social factors, bystander,
dispositional factors, and intervention. The social factor for this is the diffusion of responsibility,
because when in a large group people that are involved feel lest responsible. Responsibility is shared
between group members, which therefore create people feeling someone else should help. Also
what go in the mind of people are the benefits and the cost of helping someone. The benefits could
be a reward or personal satisfaction and the cost would be physical risk or psychological risk. the
next factor is the dispositional factors: expertise. People feel that perhaps they aren’t the right
person to help won’t help. However if everyone thinks they are not the right one to help it can result
in no one helping
