Assume all calculations are at 25ºC, so that Kw = 1.00 × 10–14 (and pKw = 14.00)
3. Write balanced chemical reactions and Ka or Kb expressions for the ionization of the
following acids and bases.
6. Hydrofluoric acid (HF) is a weak acid with Ka = 7.2 ´ 10–4 at 25 °C. For a 0.65 M
solution of HF at 25 °C, determine:
(a) [H3O+]
(b) pOH
(c) percent dissociation of HF
(d) Kb for F-
7. A student dissolves 2.15 g of hydrazoic acid, HN3, to form one litre of solution. The pH
of the solution is measured and found to be 3.01. What is the ionization constant of
hydrazoic acid?
8. How many moles (and grams) of HCl could be neutralized by 0.75 g of the antacid
CaCO3?
9. Vinegar is a 5.0 % (by weight) aqueous solution of H3CCOOH (acetic acid, Ka = 1.8 ´
10-5). What is the pH of the solution that you put on your french fries (claiming you don't

use vinegar on your fries or don’t eat fries are not acceptable answers to this question!).
Assume the density of the vinegar is 1.0 g/mL.
10. (a) Para-aminobenzoic acid (NH2C6H4COOH, or HPABA for short) is one of the
ingredients sometimes found in sunblock lotions. What is the pH of a 0.200 M
solution of HPABA? (Ka HPABA = 1.2 ´10-5).
(b) If you titrate 100 mL of the above solution with 0.200 M KOH, what is the pH of
the solution:
(c) The effective pH range of three indicators is given below. Which of these
indicators would be most appropriate for the above titration? Briefly explain why.
