Crim 125 Drug Education and Vice Control
Assessment 1.1
1. Discuss your own understanding on the meaning of vice. Elaborate your answer.
For me, vice is a behavior that is considered bad by the society and it causes harm to both the
individual doing it and to the people that surrounds him. It is something that you keep on doing
because you are already dependent to it and can’t be normal without it. As a result, it affects your
personality and productivity as a person which can result to depression.
2. Enumerate the different elements of vice. In your own observation, what are the basis in
determining whether or not a particular act may be considered as vice.
The elements of vice are the following:
a. it causes harm to self of harm to all b. it tends to include behaviors of wrongfulness or not,
which is the subject of disagreement within the community. c. it often involves behavior that is
addictive and compulsive and is unhealthy.
In my own observation, an act may be considered as a vice if it is something that a person can’t
live without even if it is not good for him and for the society he is living.
3. Write a brief summary of the history and evolution of vice. Also, write the positive as well as
the negative implications of the same.
Vice came from the Medieval Latin word “vicium” which means imperfection, offense or defect.
Vice dates back to the early civilization and continued to exist through ages. Vice is said to be an
innate human needs and can be characterized by working too hard to achieve success to
alcoholism and drug addiction. Some vice may have positive implications like for instance being
workaholic. It can be beneficial to achieve success in life as you are more into spending most of
your time working. But still it has downsides for as a result, you will not be able to maintain a
balance life and may lead to stress and exhaustion which is unhealthy.
