Assignment No.1

1. What is the difference between positive displacement and dynamic pumps? Explain
briefly.
2. What is the specific speed for the pump? Explain its use.

3. How much Hydraulic power would a pump produce when operating at 150 bars and
delivering 0.0015m3/s of oil? What power-rated electric motor would be selected to drive
this pump if its overall efficiency is 84.8%

4. A pump has a displacement volume of 100cm3. It delivers 0.0015, m3/s at 1000 rpm and
70 bars. The prime mover’s torque input is 120N.m. Determine

a. The overall efficiency of the pump

b. The theoretical torque required to operate the pump

The hydraulic system operates 12 hours per day for 250 days per year. The cost of
electricity is Birr 0.40 per KWh. If the overall efficiency of the electric motor is 85%,
determine
c. The yearly cost of electricity to operate the hydraulic system
d. The amount of yearly cost of electricity that is due to inefficiencies of the electric
motor and pump.
