__________________________________A_ It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,— ____________________________________
__________________________________B_ This debt we pay to human guile; ____________________________________
_________________________________B With torn and bleeding hearts we smile, ____________________________________
__________________________________C_ And mouth with myriad subtleties. ____________________________________

___________________________________A Why should the world be over-wise, ____________________________________
___________________________________A In counting all our tears and sighs? ____________________________________
___________________________________B Nay, let them only see us, while ____________________________________
___________________________________C We wear the mask. ____________________________________

___________________________________A We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries ____________________________________
___________________________________A To thee from tortured souls arise. ____________________________________
___________________________________B We sing, but oh the clay is vile ____________________________________
