Tutorial 5

1. Estimate the transition length at the entrance to a 15 mm tube through which 100%
glycerol at 323 K is flowing at velocity of 0.3 m/s. The density of glycerol is 1240 kg/m3.

2. Crude oil of specific gravity 0.887 flows through a pipe shown in figure below. Pipe A is
50 mm, pipe B is 75 mm and pipe C is 38 mm. An equal quantity of fluid of liquid flows
through each of pipes C. The flow through pipe A is 6.65 m3/h. Calculate average linear
velocity in each pipe.

3. Air at 293 K and 2 atm absolute pressure enters a finned tube steam heater through a
50 mm tube at an average velocity of 15 m/s. It leaves the heater through a 65 mm tube
at 363 K and 1.6 atm absolute. What is the average air velocity at the outlet?

4. On a circular conduit there are different diameters: diameter D1 = 2 m changes into D2 =

3 m. The velocity in the entrance profile was measured: v1 = 3 ms -1 . Calculate the
discharge and mean velocity at the outlet profile.. Determine also type of flow in both
conduit profiles (whether the flow is laminar or turbulent) – temperature of water T = 12°
C.

5. A newtonian fluid is confined between two broad parallel vertical plates, separated by
distance B. The plate on the left is stationary, that on the right is moving vertically
upward at a certain velocity V0. Assuming that the flow is laminar, find the equation for
the steady state velocity profile in the fluid.
