Course Objectives:
 This course will expose the students to fundamental skills to become a graphic designer.
 Students will gain basic knowledge of design thinking, aesthetic of design, history of art, basics of drawing and composition.
 Students will study ideation, development and production of messages.
 Identify and utilize design theory, and criticism from a variety of perspectives with the use of design objects. 
 Students will learn the importance of corporate identity and logo design in the visual image of a company.

 Graphic Design & other types of design
 Elements of Graphic Design: Line, Shapes, Colour, Type, Texture& Image. Difference between elements of
graphic design and elements of other forms of design.
 Principles of Graphic Design: Balance, Repetition, Proportion, Emphasis, Harmony, Contrast
 Gestalt Theory: Principles of visual perception; Rule of Thirds in designing
 Colour Theory: Colour Wheel, Colour Scheme, CMYK & RGB Models & Colour Psychology
 Typography: Evolution of Typography: A brief timeline of the history of typography and printing. The role
of typography in Graphic Design
 Type Classifications: The most commonly used type categories. Selecting the right typeface for the job.
Typeface vs. fonts. Understanding Serif & Sans serif.
 Character & paragraph formatting: Kerning, Tracking, Leading, Indents. Point Size, alignment, etc.
 Type Pairing: Rules, tips & tricks of combining fonts. Type family and its use.
 Image: Types of images, vector & raster. Different image formats.
 Exercise: Application of principles and other concepts of design
Module II:Adobe Photoshop
 Getting acquainted with Photoshop
 Changing image mode, image size, resolution, canvas size & rotation
 The Tool Box
 Colour adjustments & corrections: Levels, Curves, Channel Mixer, Colour Balance, etc.
 Filling & Stroking
 Entering & formatting Text
 Layers & Masking

Module III: Corporate Identity & Logo Design
 Corporate Identity
 Elements of corporate identity (logo, typeface, colour, imagery, style guide)
 Characteristics of a good logo 10%
 Types of logos: Wordmark, lettermark, pictorial mark, combination mark, abstract, emblem & mascot
 Logo design process (Research, Concept, Design & Application)
 Deconstruction of famous logos
 Exercises: Logo design (manual)
Module IV:Adobe Illustrator
 Introduction to the interface
 Panels & Workspaces in Adobe Illustrator
 Vector basics/Selection & Direct selection tool
 The tool box
 Drawing with the Pen tool/Brush tool/Pencil tool & more
 Creating shape vectors
 Using rotate, reflect, duplicate, etc. options
 Grouped vectors & compounding vector shapes
 Using Pathfinder option 40%
 The Blob brush tool & Eraser tool
 Type tools in Adobe Illustrator
 Text formatting options
 Using Colour/Swatches/Pantone’s/Gradients & more
 Fill & Stroke effects in Adobe Illustrator
