CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world. It is the

acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, morals, beliefs, habits and personal

development that makes our life better and understand the world in which we live.

However, there is a critical issue that may encounter in this New Normal Education. In

New Normal, you are flexible to learn at your own pace to prepare yourself in the future

but many students are having difficulties to adjust and synchronize all school activities

and household chores in a given allotted time. Starting to accomplish studies can be

stressful to many students, since it means the necessity to establish new relationships,

develop new studying habits related to the chosen program, cope with overwork, learn

time management, and often also change one’s place of residence.

At the University of the Philippines – Open University (UPOU), a single-mode DE

institution in the Philippines, the term “open and distance e-learning” (ODeL) has been

coined to refer to the new mode of online or Web-based DE. More specifically, ODeL

refers to “forms of education provision that use contemporary technologies to enable

varied combinations of synchronous and asynchronous communication among learners

and educators who are physically separated from one another for part or all of the

educational experience" (Alfonso, 2012, n.p.). ODeL expands the term “open and

distance learning” or ODL to include use of e-learning or online learning methodologies

to enable multiple forms of interaction and dialogue that can bridge the distance

between teachers and learners (Anderson, 2008c; Calvert, 2005; Garrison, 2009) and

provide access to a vast array of interactive and multimedia learning resources that can

be used to design learning environments for learners in diverse circumstances (Bates,

2008; Haughey, Evans & Murphy, 2008; Tait, 2010). Using online portals and VLEs

further enables DE institutions to support both independent learning and collaborative

learning through “increasingly complex pedagogical structures” (Haughey et al., 2008,

p. 15).

Based on data gathered via DepEd’s National Learner Enrolment and

SurveyForms (LESFs), 8.8 million out of the 22.2 million enrollees (39.6% of total

respondents) preferred modular distance learning for the upcoming school

year.Meanwhile, 3.9 million enrollees (17.6%) were partial to blended learning

(whichuses a combination of different modalities), 3.8 million (17.1%) preferred

onlinelearning, and 1.4 million and 900,000 enrollees preferred TV-based and radio-

based learning, respectively.

As a student who also experience the stress that caused by synchronized online

class and household chores, we want to engaged a connection to other students to

show empathy. We will encourage students to share their feelings and respond to one

another. We also want to identify and use more effective time management strategies

that we may use to cope up in stress that has been experienced by so many students in

our school. According to Angara et al. (2015), situational challenges include job and

home responsibilities that reduce time for study.

Good time management skills have been identified as having a “buffering” effect

on stress (Misra & McKean, 2000) and are a key indication of higher performance and

lower stress and anxiety in higher education (Kearns & Gardiner, 2007). However, many

students find it hard to regulate both their studies and their external lives (Van der Meer,

Jansen, & Torenbeek, 2010) leading to time mismanagement, poor sleep patterns, and

increased levels of stress (Hardy, 2003). Time management skills have been shown to

have a positive impact on student learning and student outcomes (Kearns & Gardiner,

2007; Kelly, 2002; McKenzie & Gow, 2004) and Krause and Coates (2008) report that
the capacity to successfully manage their time is the foundation of students developing

good study habits and strategies for success. Time management offers individuals the

means to structure and control their activities (Claessens, van Eerde, Rutte, & Roe,

2004).

Students who are able to develop time management strategies and set

appropriate work goals for themselves offer a self-regulatory framework (Miller, Greene,

Montalvo, Ravindran, & Nichols, 1996) regarding their approach, effort, persistence, and

time management. Strongman and Burt (2000) suggest that there is a relationship

between academic attainment and the ability to stay on task for extended periods of

time and found that students with higher academic standing took fewer and shorter

breaks.

This only means that an effective time management has a good impact to those

students who are having trouble choosing what they are going to prioritize first because

when the time management is effective, they can enjoy their self-time and do their

responsibilities at home resulting that this research would be a better help for a student

and encourage them to apply this time management for a better result on synchronizing

online class and household chores.

Statement of the Problem

The aims of this study was to perceive the coping mechanism of students in

synchronizing online class and household chores.

Specifically, the study seeks answers to the following questions:

1. How may the profile of the respondents be described:

1.1.1 age,

1.1.2 sex,
1.1.3 grade level

2. How many students agreed on online class?

3. What are your reasons in agreeing with online-blended learning?

3.3.1 I don't want to quit school

3.3. 2 Online classes and modules are more convenient than

going back to face-to-face class

3.3.3 It is more safe to study at home than to go to school

3.3.4 My parents decided to agree on this online-class

*Other reason/s (state your answer/s)

4. What are the strategies that students do to implement the proper managing of

their school works and household chores?

4.4.1 I create my to-do list

4.4.2 Avoid social media

4.4.3 Avoid going out in public places

4.4.4 Motivating myself to face my schedules with a positive

attitude

*Other coping mechanism (type your answer/s)

5. If you are going to choose, are you agree on reopening of face-to-face class or

not and stay on this blended learning educational system? Yes or No?

5.5.1 Yes

5.5.2 No
5.5.3 Undecided

Significance of the Study

This study will be a significant in promoting the effectiveness of time

management for student in this time of pandemic. Time management can be very useful

in a student's hectic schedule like doing modules and at the same time doing the

household chores. Effective time management not only helps with your learning but can

also make you more productive at work and in your personal life in select Senior High

School at Prenza NHS hopefully anticipates the following benefits to the following:

Students. This study may help students because they will gain knowledge about

time management despite homework and modular-online learning. And will be a trial

study to be able to continue their education. Also, to communicate with their

classmates without hesitation or being shy about doing their school group work.

Parents. The results of the study will help the parents of the respondents have

more time to do their other works. Good Time Management for Parents Means Learning

to Delegate. As they get older, give children roles and responsibilities. It seems to work

more effectively than the reactive habit of asking/telling them to do something. When

they have roles they’re accountable, although it’s fair to say that a good amount of

patience is still needed.

Teachers. They can have an idea of what the correct adjustments and

reductions will be needed to make for their students to be more productive. They will be

able to help students cope with their blended learning challenges and understand what

are the things that a student lack and what to improve.

Community. This research will give them awareness of what the student is

experiencing in today’s education system and it can also help them make better

decisions when it comes to education.

Future Researchers. The analysis and obtaining of information about the

problem of concurrence of homework and school work can be done as a basis for their
research related to this study. This is beneficial to researchers who wants to pay

attention to this problem.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study is primarily focused on how the student manage their time, How

student is doing the household chores and online class at the same time. The

researchers aim to describe the effectiveness of time management for online

students, who are often working full-time, taking care of family, or juggling other

commitments.

This is a quantative research which will use a causal-comparative research

design.  That seeks to find relationships between independent and dependent variables

after an action or event has already occurred. This entry discusses these differences, as

well as the benefits, process, limitations, and criticism of this type of research design.

Conducting the study is about “Efficient Time Management: Remedy for Anxiety with

Heaps of Lessons and Homework in this Modular Study”. It aims to identify the barriers

and reasons for dividing time into homework and modular study in today’s pandemic.

The variables in the study are the Senior high school students of Prenza National

High School, number of the students who always attending the online class, and

average of the students who can do online class and household chores at the same

time.

This study focused solely on collecting data responding to “Remedy for

Schoolwork and Homework Anxiety in Modular-Online Learning among Prenza National

High School Students”. This study will cover only Prenza National High School students

numbering up to fifty (50) to seventy (70) students only. The researchers will explore the

methods of students attending Prenza National High School (PNHS) and aged twelve

(12) to seventeen (17) in synchronizing homework and schoolwork. The method to be

used by the researchers is a questionnaire with five (5) questions. The methods to be
used by the researchers will determine the methods and remedies used by the students

in homework and school work.
