Composer Biography
Frank Ticheli is an American composer from California. Ticheli has composed many pieces for
choral ensembles, orchestra, and concert bands. He currently teaches composition as a
professor at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music. He is well known,
throughout America and Europe, and has won many prestigious awards. Many of his concert
band pieces are considered modern standards in the Western concert band repertoire. Ticheli
completed his undergraduate degree in composition at Southern Methodist University in 1981,
his master’s in composition at the University of Michigan in 1983, and his doctoral degree in
composition from the University of Michigan in 1987.

Background Information
Rest was commissioned by Dr. Russel Mikkelson, director of bands at The Ohio State University, in memory of his father. Dr.
Mikkelson was a fan of Ticheli’s choral piece There Will Be Rest, so he reached out to Dr. Ticheli about setting it for band, and luckily
for all of us, after a great deal of persuasion, Rest was the result. It was important to Ticheli to preserve almost everything from his
original composition including harmony, dynamics, and even register. This piece is based on a beautiful and fragile poem written by
Sara Teasdale, the melody is mainly syllabic with text of the choral setting except for the extended climax section. Rest is a deeply
emotional piece of music full of legato, lyrical melodic lines as Ticheli explores dissonance and consonance, pulling on the
heartstrings of musicians and listeners alike.
“There Will Be Rest”
There will be rest, and sure stars shining
Over the roof-tops crowned with snow,
A reign of rest, serene forgetting
The music of stillness holy and low,
I will make this world of my devising
Out of a dream in my lonely mind
I shall find the crystal of peace, --above me
Stars I shall find.

The Heart Statement

The heart of Rest is the subtle buildup of tension and dissonances within independent parts that lead to a huge climatic release as an
ensemble where both the musicians and audience members feel as though they have conquered something together.
