Assignment # 2
Course Title: Mechanics of Material-II Course Code: ME-3373

Batch: 2019 Course Teacher: Dr. Imran Shah

Total Marks: 10 Submission Date: 16 Dec 2021

Question #1 (PLO-2/CLO-3/C-4) 3 Marks

(a) The 1.75-in.-diameter shaft AB is made of a grade of steel for which the yield strength is σY =
36 ksi. Using the maximum-distortion-energy criterion, Analyze the magnitude of the force P
for which yield occurs when T = 15 kip in.

(b) The cast-aluminum rod shown is made of an alloy for which σUT = 70 MPa and σUC = 175
MPa. Knowing that the magnitude T of the applied torques is slowly increased and using
Mohr’s criterion, Analyze the shearing stress τ0 that should be expected at rupture.

Question #2 (PLO-2/CLO-3/C-4) 3 Marks

(a) A steel penstock has a 750-mm outer diameter and connects a reservoir at A with a generating
station at B. Knowing that the density of water is 1000 kg/m3 and that the allowable normal
stress in the steel is 85 MPa, Analyze the smallest thickness that can be used for the penstock.
(b) The cylindrical portion of the compressed-air tank shown is fabricated of 0.25-in. thick plate
welded along a helix forming an angle β =30° with the horizontal. Knowing that the allowable
stress normal to the weld is 10.5 ksi, Analyze the largest gage pressure that can be used in the
tank.

Question #3 (PLO-2/CLO-3/C-4) 4 Marks

(a) The 36-mm-diameter shaft is made of a grade of steel with a 250-MPa tensile yield
stress. Using the maximum-shearing-stress criterion, Analyze the magnitude of the
torque T for which yield occurs when P = 200 kN.

(b) The state of plane stress shown occurs at a critical point of a steel machine component. As a
result of several tensile tests, it has been found that the tensile yield strength is σY = 250 MPa
for the grade of steel used. Analyze the factor of safety with respect to yield, using (a) the
maximum-shearing stress criterion, and (b) the maximum-distortion-energy criterion.
