Professional Service

For my service to my professional organization, I decided to sign up for the Froedtert

Hospital drug take back drive. The goal of the drive through was to provide people with a safe

venue for them to drop off their unused, expired prescriptions or over the counter medications. A

group of volunteers and students teamed up with Froedtert and a local nonprofit agency to set up

this event.

The drive through took place in Port Washington, WI near the local fire station. As cars

pulled in to deposit their medications, the volunteers collected and separated them into bins of

controlled and noncontrolled substances. Thankfully there were several pharmacy students there

to help us distinguish certain controlled substances. Medications of all types were collected.

Even several farmers brought in expired medicine jars and pills for their horses and livestock. I

have never seen bigger pills than the ones those farmers dropped off.

After each person drove in to drop off their medications, we provided them with

pamphlets regarding where future drop off events could be found, and how to properly dispose of

them in other regards. Once the event had concluded, all medication receptacles were securely

sealed. The local police department weighed all controlled substances and disposed of all

medications. The community members that came through were very grateful to have been

provided an outlet where they could dispose of their unused medications in a safe way and

relieve themselves of this household clutter.
