5.11.

SPEED/ DISTANCE LOGS

5.11.1. The speed/distance logs must be kept on whenever it is practical to do so.

5.11.2. The distance reading should be entered in the log at the end of each watch. A close check
should be kept on the error of the speed/ distance log

5.11.3. The accuracy of the speed/ distance log input to the ARPA or other navigation equipment must
be checked frequently.

5.11.4. Special caution must be exercised when an E.M. Log is used as input for speed, especially in
strong tides/currents, as the speeds may not be accurate.

5.11.5. The duty officer shall inform engine room for raising the log, if it extends below the keel.
Electrical Officer under the guidance of the Chief Engineer shall be responsible for the
maintenance of the equipment.
