Film Reflection Paper

The representations of class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and ability in American

film has a long and jaded past, but it also has a very hopeful and bright future. Since the

beginning of the film industry the representation of the groups of people listed above has the

unfortunate past of being incorrect and very offensive to these groups of people. The film

industry and especially the film industry in America does not have the best track record with

representing certain groups of people in a proper light and with the accuracy they deserve to be

represented with. As an Asian American person, I have seen and felt the consequences of these

misrepresentations firsthand, but with work things can get better for misrepresented groups.

Film can promote critical thinking because it gives the audience the chance to dig deep

and peel back layers to a story or a character. When watching films critical thinking is a must.

Critical thinking doesn’t have to be all about the story or the character, but it can be about the

set, costumes, locations, dialogue, and so much more. It also gives people the chance to think

critically about how this movie might connect them back to the world they live in. Without film

people wouldn’t be as critically thinking as they are now. Film connects us to the world and to

each other, so does critical thinking.
