The representations of class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and ability in American
film has a long and jaded past, but it also has a very hopeful and bright future. Since the
beginning of the film industry the representation of the groups of people listed above has the
unfortunate past of being incorrect and very offensive to these groups of people. The film
industry and especially the film industry in America does not have the best track record with
representing certain groups of people in a proper light and with the accuracy they deserve to be
represented with. As an Asian American person, I have seen and felt the consequences of these
misrepresentations firsthand, but with work things can get better for misrepresented groups.
Film can promote critical thinking because it gives the audience the chance to dig deep
and peel back layers to a story or a character. When watching films critical thinking is a must.
Critical thinking doesn’t have to be all about the story or the character, but it can be about the
set, costumes, locations, dialogue, and so much more. It also gives people the chance to think
critically about how this movie might connect them back to the world they live in. Without film
