Exercise #1

1.
a. Nature of Science
~ Most professionals agree that science is a way of explaining the natural world. It’s
stated that it is both a body of knowledge and a process. A body of knowledge in a
way that it represents current understanding of natural systems. It’s also a process
because the knowledge has been established and is being continually extended,
refined, and revised.
b. Culture of Science
~ The culture of science can be defined as the norms, values, beliefs, expectations,
and conventional actions of a group. With this, science can be considered as a
cultural enterprise, since scientists share a well-defined system of meaning and
symbols with which they interact socially. Evidence is collected, interpreted, and
influenced by current scientific perspectives and by the society, culture, and even
the scientist’s subjective opinions.
c. Practice of Science
~ These are somehow the steps to follow to produce a better and clearer
information to offer or in another term, the Scientific Method:
1. Question: identifying the problem. What information is unknown or
missing.
2. Research: information about the problem. What is already known and
what isn't.
3. Hypothesis: prediction or an educated guess of a possible outcome.
4. Experiment: testing the hypothesis.
5. Observation: data collected while performing the experiment.
6. Result/Conclusion: determining if the hypothesis is correct and what
impacted the outcome
7. Communicate: presenting the result and data through various media.
2. Science contributes to technology in a way that new knowledge which serves as
a source of new ideas towards new technical possibilities. This serves as a source of
tools and techniques for more efficient engineering design and a knowledge base for
evaluation of feasibility of designs. Science helps in research instrumentation,
laboratory techniques and analytical methods used in research that eventually find
their way into design or industrial practices, often through intermediate disciplines.
This helps with practice of research as a source for development of new human skills
and capabilities which will be useful for current and future technologies.

3. As per my own knowledge and understanding, the role of science in my everyday

life is that it helps me think thoroughly towards making a certain decision. With the
thought of knowing how things work, it enables me to imagine the outcome of a
certain decision right before doing it so that I can make the best choice possible. As
we all know, science is everything and everywhere, just by being knowledgeable of
these things will make us be a better critical thinker and a better decision maker
which may result to us being successful in life. Now when it comes to technology,
it’s as simple as that life is so much easier with technology. Everything is much
easier in a way that you don’t have to work an extra effort towards doing something
because there is an easier and more compact way of doing that task.
