1 GENERAL INFORMATION ON CAIRNS

1.1 BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Cairns is a laid-back city located along the


eastern coast of Far North Queensland,
Australia with a population of over 140,000
people. It is a popular tourist destination, well-
known as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef,
one of the seven natural wonders of the world,
and the Daintree Rainforest, which is part of a
UNESCO World Heritage site and the oldest
surviving rainforest in the world.

1.2 WEATHER & LOCAL TIME

With a tropical climate all year round, Cairns experiences generally hot, humid summers and mild,
dry winters. For the month of May, it is the tail end of Autumn, as well as the start of the dry season
and cooler weather.

The official currency used in Cairns is the Australian Dollar (AUD).

Cairns International Airport is located less than 7 kilometres away (approximately 10 to 15 minutes
travel by car) from Cairns City centre.

2.4 HOW TO GET TO THE HOTEL (AIRPORT TRANSFER)

Taxis are the recommended mode of transport for getting to the hotel and can be found at the taxi
stand right outside the Cairns international airport terminal. The drive from Cairns international
airport to Hilton hotel will take around 10-15 mins (6.6km) and generally cost 20-30 AUD.

3.2.2 KURANDA VILLAGE
Kuranda Village is a picturesque mountain retreat
surrounded by rainforest, located 25km northwest of
Cairns. The village is home to an extraordinary
number of artists and craft workers, and this is
reflected in the large number of shops and market
stalls selling their beautiful products. Browse through
the quaint village shops for vibrant handcrafted silk
and cotton clothing, exclusive jewellery, locally made
Aboriginal artwork, gifts and more.1

3.2.3 RAINFORESTATION NATURE PARK


Five minutes away from Kuranda village is the award-
winning Rainforestation Nature Park, a 100 acre
tourist attraction set in the midst of the World Heritage
Rainforest. Enjoy a fantastic BBQ buffet lunch inspired
by bush tucker flavours at the in-house restaurant.
Experience the tropical rainforest from a totally unique
perspective aboard an amphibious WWII Army Duck.

Get up close and personal with native Australian


animals at the Wildlife Park. Handfeed the free
roaming kangaroos and wallabies in the
landscaped gardens, observe the endangered
cassowary, see wombats and lace monitors, and
view local snakes and other reptiles. Do check out
the star attraction, “Jack the Ripper”, a 5 metre
saltwater crocodile weighing at 650kg.2

3.2.4 SKYRAIL RAINFOREST CABLEWAY


Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is a 7.5km scenic
cableway running above the Barron Gorge National
Park, taking approximately 1.5 hours one way.
Embark on a fascinating journey of discovery over
the world’s oldest surviving tropical rainforest.
Glide just meters above the rainforest canopy in a
six-person gondola and immerse yourself in the
sights, sounds, smells and tranquillity of one of the
most botanically captivating areas on earth.3

3.3.2 FRANKLAND ISLANDS

Frankland islands are a group of uninhabited islands situated 45km south of Cairns city. As a
protected national park, the daily passenger limit to Frankland Islands is a maximum of 100 people
per day. Enjoy an unforgettable intimate experience out to this tranquil tropical island, which boasts
an abundance of plant, wildlife species, and beautiful, unspoilt beaches

3.3.3 WHAT TO BRING


Food and drinks, including lunch will be provided for the day. As there will be a lot of sun exposure
and wet activities on this tour, it is recommended to bring the following items:

▪ Sun Protection - Hat, sunscreen


▪ Swimwear, Towel, Change of clothing
▪ Shoes/footwear that can get wet for island walk and boat transfers
