Visa Formalities
International students need a visa for study purposes
(Aufenthaltserlaubnis in der Form des Sichtvermerks) to
enter Germany. The visa must either be issued by the
German embassy or by the German consulate of your
home country. This does not apply for applicants and
students from EU-states and from those states with whom
the Federal Republic has signed special agreements.
Members of various other states may also enter Germany
without a visa, if they do not plan to stay any longer than
three months. After the expiry of this deadline, however,
students of the above not mentioned countries do need a
visa for study purposes which can only be obtained in the
home country! This practically means that they would have
to leave Germany once more to return to their country
which may be very expensive and time-consuming. So,
please do not enter Germany as a tourist! A tourist visa
cannot be converted into a student visa afterwards!
Aspects of Residence and Industrial / Labour Law
After you have entered Germany you must apply for a
residence permit for study purposes at the foreigner’s
registration office.
EU-citizens and citizens from other countries who do not
need any visa are also obliged to apply, if they intend to
remain in Germany for more than three months.
Please note that the registration of your application may
take up to four weeks. You may obtain all application

You must hand in the following documents:
1. a valid passport including a visa for study purposes (not
for EU-citizens);
2. a passport photograph;
3. a written confirmation of your application by the
University of Rostock;
4. a certificate of finance (scholarship certificate or bank
declaration of your parents etc.) Full-time students would
have to provide this prove at least for one year. Currently
this should amount to about € 600,- per month;
5. a health insurance certificate which is officially accepted
in Germany (Formular E111 / Chipcard). As a student at a
German university you may also be insured at a German
health insurance company;
6. a currently valid tenancy agreement.
Application and Admission
The documents can be sent directly to the university
(Address: Universität Rostock, Dezernat Akademische
Angelegenheiten, Studentensekretariat, 18051 Rostock,
Germany) by July 15th at the latest (for the winter
semester).
Application Documents
Your application should include the following documents:
1. a correctly filled out application including your passport
photograph and your signature, online at:

2. If applying at two or more universities which participate
in the ASSIST-procedure, you might need to attach the
ASSIST Application Form. More information at:

Admission
After your documents have been evaluated (usually
four to six weeks after the application deadline has
expired), you will receive a written notification about
whether or not you have been admitted to the
University of Rostock.
Working during your Study Visit
According to the official law of the State of
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern international students with a
residence permit for study purposes are not allowed to
have a job during the semester. If you hand in the
appropriate application at the foreigner’s registration
office, you may be allowed to work for 19 hours a week
(at most). But please do not intend to finance your
studies by means of a job since, after all, even eight
hours of daily study would not be enough to earn a
degree – you should fully concentrate on your studies
(which does not exclude cultural activities, of course).

Language course
The International Office of the University of Rostock
offers German language courses for beginners. These
courses will always start in January and July if there
are enough interested students.
We suggest to visit such a language course as it will
ease your study and living in Germany.
